Thanks Gimp, that's what this thread needed!

I couldn't see the red mark on my gear either. But there's a line on the tooth at least though.

ANY fuel filtered or not is better for a HH than NONE. While my filters did need replacement (my fault), I was still getting fuel.

No. Prior to that, it started fine.

Well I didn't document everything. I'm certain I used a few "sentence enhancers" every time it died on me. :patracy:

No I did not. I used the best set of rings out of the two heads. One set had "squared" off on the sides, the other was still nicely pliable and round. I haven't reinstalled the cut off cable/cover yet though. There hasn't been any fuel (diesel only remember) leaking from the cut off lever or...

More engine problems (Documentation of testing fuel system, failure of Hyd Head)

The difference is probably how the situation is handled. I was running 2400+ rpm when it cut out (lost fuel), I kept on the fuel peddle thinking I could force it to make it to the shop 1/4 of a mile ahead. So I ran it for 1/4 of a mile, no fuel, 2000+ rpm. Or 15~20 seconds at 2K+ rpms...

More engine problems (Documentation of testing fuel system, failure of Hyd Head)

Well it's official, I killed the HH by starving it! I installed the HH at lunch today. Bleed the system and bumped the starter, it roared to life. Not even any starting fluid. I'm not upset, it was a $150 mistake. (Thank you again Tony!) I was trying to be cheap, and it ended up costing me...

More engine problems (Documentation of testing fuel system, failure of Hyd Head)

Picked up a HH from Twright today. It doesn't compress anywhere nearly as easy as mine did. I did get it popped back into the IP. But I still need to finish up the bolts, plumbing, cutoff lever, exc. I'm thinking that once I get everything buttoned back together, I'll hold off on...

Well I certainly have to replace the HH now. Broke the bowtie retainer trying to disassemble it. There is an overlapping wave form pattern at the top most portion of the plunger (last 1/4" of the plunger that actually pushes the fuel). Playing around with the plunger, trying to pull it...

More engine problems (Documentation of testing fuel system, failure of Hyd Head)

Well I used half my lunch break to pull the HH. (Thankfully my kids are off today, I enlisted the help of my oldest to watch the gear on the HH while I turned the engine over) Got everything apart pretty easily. (FWIW, just lining up the pump is 50% of the work!) I'm really starting to...

More engine problems (Documentation of testing fuel system, failure of Hyd Head)

I'm also of the same mindset now Tom. I really feel as though my HH is dead from the starvation. The fact it will not start without fluid directs me towards that. Noting that there's no smoke when cranking means I'm not getting fuel during start up. I know I will get injectors to pop off...

Post 46. Hose replaced, inside was fine, just the ends had swollen. This is a new lift pump, provides 5-7psi as it should.

That's why I'm documenting all the steps I've taken and the events. Furthermore I failed to mention, the truck has never started without starting fluid and WOT since I ran it out of fuel. I'm kinda inclined to think that the starvation of me rolling it for 1/4 mile at 2500rpm probably did the...

More engine problems (Documentation of testing fuel system, failure of Hyd Head)

I'm also starting to lean more towards HH issues. I'm also speculating that while I did see the injector fire externally of the engine. It's much easier to pop off without having to also overcome the cyl pressures. I also think it feeds back into what you mentioned earlier Eric. The 100% WMO...

More engine problems (Documentation of testing fuel system, failure of Hyd Head)

Reinstalled the lift pump. Replaced the hoses. Added 10 more gallons of diesel fuel. Fuel pressure is over 5psi now cranking. Stays up there as well. Pulled the center HH plug, great fuel flow there. Couldn't get it to start at all. No smoke from the exhaust. A whiff of starting fluid...

More engine problems (Documentation of testing fuel system, failure of Hyd Head)

Just another update. Pulled the in tank pump. I noticed not only were both ends of the in tank hose swollen. (The end closer to the pump was loose, the end near the tank plate was snug) Also I noticed the barb on the pump itself wobbled and was loose. It's not optimal, but I'm trying to...
