Mine in the past started with just a bad head gasket. Then since I was going to have to buy a head gasket set, I might as well have the valves done. Then since the valves where done I should put new rings on the pistons or they could start passing oil. Since the pistons where out I might as well...
With my luck as soon as I set them "free" I would need them ! Just like the time I took a bunch of "SM420" transmissions to the scrap yard. The next month this 4X4 magazine had an article on using the "SM420" behind some jeeps. The price for even trashed units went sky high ! I had complete...
If it's just coming out the breather then I would not worry about it. Your trip looked like a long one so the differential probably got good and hot. The oil can get like water on a trip like that and splash everywhere. That is also why I always recommend 90/140W for all differentials . The...
Good thing I took the pictures of my Fluke meters yesterday. I needed to remove the batteries out of them so I wouldn't get corrosion in the units. Normally 9 volt batteries don't leak like regular batteries will but I have had them do it in the past. Better safe then sorry. Kind of depressing...
The best way to test the temperature of the oil is to use an "immersion" probe. That way your getting the actual temperature not the temperature of the housing which is acting as a heatsink.
So you actually used a temp probe to confirm the temperature ? I have several temperature probes for my "Fluke" meter. Goes a long way in helping diagnose a problem.
I've actually gotten some severe burns from working on differentials that just came off the freeway. When I worked at IHC in Tukwila it was located right at the off-ramp of I-5 . The truckers would get off the road and come in for a quick check-up and oil change and sometimes a complete gear...
These pictures remind me of when I went to trade school in Arizona. The sky in the morning and night was always so beautiful ! Here in Washington if we even see the sky it is just a grey blob up there. Right now as I'm writing this it is pouring down rain ! It's like a cow pissing on a flat...
The guy who sells the "Parker" pumps is running low on them. So if you want one better get on it now. The Parker pumps run much quieter then the Olympic pumps do. I have a new Olympic pump in my right tank and a Parker pump in my left tank. Both run at about 9 psi .
