I had considered doing the same.

I have other vehicles to drive, so no need to.

Did you disconnect both batteries before you began working on the starter?

I did(incorrectly).

I noticed the TM says to disconnect both battery negative terminals, but I had disconnected the front negative and the rear positive.

Before I proceed, I'll disconnect the rear battery negative.

I went to town today. For the fun of it, I went to the Chevy dealer first. The long bolt is obsolete(none in stock).

I then went to the local starter rebuilder. He didn't have a new one in stock and had no old diesel mt27 starters to rob one from.

He is going to order a few. He buys these from WAI, part number 84-1438.

Here's a couple other numbers for future reference. Amsco DS-946, Ace/Accurate S1585,and of course GM/Delco Remy 1975326.

Also while in town I stopped at NAPA to get a couple things. My friend there runs a few M1008s for work/plow trucks. He just experienced his first starter run-on(yes, I told him when he started getting these trucks, how to eliminate the issue, but he never converted them.) No surprise here, needs a new starter now. He said he is going to do the conversion on them all, soon.

My bolt should be in in a few days, I'll reply when I make progress.

Got the call today, my new starter motor bolt was in.( I actually ordered 2).

I put it all together today.

New starter bolts(had them), torqued to 33 ft/lbs.

Support bracket replaced and tightened.

Battery terminals all cleaned and tightened.
