that doesnt look like where the diode would go, do you have a picture of the GEN 1 diode if there is such an animal? Ive never had this go out or have had to replace one so i really have no idea

Apparently my GEN2 diode is missing.

Two questions -

1. What is the part # for a new diode?

2. Is the diode necessary for the GEN2 to function correctly?
You are indeed missing the GEN2 diode for the exciter circuit.

Part number is 12006377. It is used quite a few times on the CUCVs. It has been discused before.

MKCOEN posted the Radio Shack number before when he and KEITH_J where working on the M1010

http://www.steelsoldiers.com/534886-post98.html

"part number is 2761144 for Radio Shack. They were under $2 for a package of 2 so I bought 2 packs in case we need spares for the trip. They're listed on the package as "Epoxy Rectifier Diodes - 3 amps 400 PIV""

The diodes are important to the circuits and should be replaced, but you can get by without the capacitors/noise suppressors if they go bad.

Make sure that you install the new diode correctly. The diodes allow current to pass in one direction only.

There isn't a diode in the exciter circuit for GEN1, only GEN2.

The diodes are originally Motorola units and can be found if you look.

The Radio Shack part just happens to be a good replacement. And they usually have them in stock.

If you want a new diode you can buy it elsewhere.

Diode part number 1N5404 which replaces the GM part number of 12006377 and NSN 6145-01-192-1643

Here is one location. You can order the minimum of 1 or 1250

http://www.digikey.com/product-detail/en/1N5404/1N5404FSTR-ND/975909

And if Radio Shack has them in stock: Part number 2761144
