Good afternoon all-

I was looking through my "Standard Catalog of US Military Vehicles" and found a page about the M26A1. I was wondering if anyone here had seen or even heard of the thing. It's listed as a 40 ton truck used for tank recovery.

Here is the only picture I could find online... it's a model of the truck and the corresponding M15A1 tank transporter trailer.

Matt

Post edit: I realize this a WWII era truck, but there is no real place for WWII heavy trucks on the site. I just figured that this area might give me the best luck.

If I am not mistaken, this behemoth is also known as the "Dragon Wagon"

Here are some more examples for your enjoyment:

the m26 was armored, the later unarmored verson was the m26a1, thay built the a1 because it was felt that the tank retrever was used mostly after main hostilities was over and with the EXTREM weight of the armored cab was distroying the front end

I just bought one of these M26A1s from a scrap yard. Can anyone point me to where some other of these trucks are located? I’d like to put together a list of this truck’s brothers…and to know who to turn to for tech question and parts.

Thanks!
Daniel

Hi. Liberty Restorations in Iowa bought one from a friend out here near Seattle. It is, without a doubt, a beast. It has a huge chain drive for the rear wheels and an oil drip system, so it leaves a trail of oil wherever it goes.

A few years ago Armycarsusa.com was restoring one. I saw it when they were redoing the rear end.

Big is an understatement... I want one too.

I went to a GL site in TN to pick up a Bolster Trailer......the building the GL office was in was guarded by a "Dragon Wagon". I think it was just the tractor. Very impressive beast but not very practical to drive around. One of the military guys at the place said they had attemted to get it running but did not have the funds to buy parts (if they were available).
