dana 60 vs 14 bolt detroits

Is the 14 bolt in the M1031 a 10.5" or 11.5" unit - just checking but think it is only a 10.5" since not a dually. Wanting to upgrade to a dually rear axle (higher GVW) like a M1028A2/3 is not as stressed when maximally loaded like I plan to be most of the time once the camper is on (the payload will only go up 600# I believe)

Can the Detroit locker from the existing rear 14 bolt be used in the 11.5" 14 bolt? If not can it be used in the front Dana60?

The older 14 bolt full float used a 10.5" ring gear (up to 2000). Some DRW vehicles used a Dana 70. It also has a 10.5" ring gear. The newer model 14 bolt axles in the 3500 HD trucks are 14 bolts with an 11.5" ring gear (2001+).

Your 1031 is an older 14 bolt with 10.5" ring gear. Dually trucks could have a Dana 70 and it too had a 10.5" ring gear.

My "1028" was also a 1031. The 1031 bed is cool until you need to use your truck as a truck.

GM also has a 9.5 inch 14 bolt used in 2500's

The dually 1028's all had dana 70's out back.

The "locker" is also the ring gear carrier, so no you can't be swapping it to other size units.

The Detroit locker in a 14 bolt full float can be swapped into an open 14 bolt full float as the open and locking carrier (detroit) are the same. The Gove Loc carrier is different.

The 9.5" 14 bolt is the semi float axle.

You wont hurt the 10.5 14 bolt.

The RAWR (rear axle weight rating) is usually limited by the tires or springs that axle can handle whatever you would throw at it.

The dana 70 is comparable strength wise with the 14 bolt some would argue the 14 bolt is stronger because it has a extra pinion bearing
