Gas tank breathing.

I recently purchased an M37 from New Hampshire. A thin pipe from the gas tank is broken. According to the book it goes under the air cleaner. Is this the breather for the tank? - So it is better for me to renew it?

Yes, it's the fording vent. If it's broken your tank will still be vented and won't create a vacuum but just don't go under water.
