M38A1 Air Filter Assembly Pre Filter

I’ll add some pictures but when I mounted the air filter assembly on my a1 I wasn’t able to put the pre filter on. Not enough room between the air filter and fender, had to remove the assembly, install the pre filter and reinstall the entire assembly to the firewall.
it does have the correct lid and oil bath filter is the correct part number is this normal for the Pre filter or might I have the wrong canister?

That was my first thought, but nothing else looked out of place so I started looking at the air cleaner assembly. Added some pictures.

I believe some later fenders are more bulbous on the inside.

Can't say I've heard of different fenders before, but I've only been in the A1 world for about 10 years.

To me, that pre-filter just looks a little oversized.
