Lots of Crankcase oil blowing out exhaust..

Hi, I just purchased a 1970 AM General M35A2-C from a private party..
It seemed to run great when I test drove it, and about 5 miles into the trip home, it quit on me.. I was blocking the road, so I tried to restart it, which it did just fine, and I managed to pull it off onto the shoulder..
The engine seemed to be overheating, and it was making a clunking noise.. (I am uncertain where it was coming from, and being that these engines are so loud anyway, I couldn't tell if it was simply running rough, or if there was some sort of mechanical problem..

I let it cool down for a while, and also checked the fuel system for air.. (There was definately some in there) I restarted it, and it did seem much quieter, but then I noticed that a rather large amount of crankcase oil was coming from the stack, and blowing all over the side of the truck and the roadway.. (It was dark so it was not noticed immediately)..

I ended up having it towed home.. I suspected that the turbo may be the culprit, but although it has some wear, the oil is coming from somewhere inside the engine..

I am new to military vehicles, and don't know much about these multifuel engines.. (It has the White LDT465 -1c )

After buying it, and paying the $600 tow bill, I can't afford to hire a diesel mechanic at the moment.. Does anyone have any ideas what could be the culprit before I go tearing into it myself?

The oil seems to be coming from the front half of the engine and through the exhaust...

Thanks,
Dan

Well I suppose it could be the oil seal on the turbo, but that sounds like a lot of oil. Also, that clunking sound makes me nervous too<img src="emoticons/icon_smile_shock.gif" alt="Shock"> I believe you can pull the turbo and start the engine without it, just cap off the oil feed. That way you could see where the oil was coming from. If it is still blowing out then you know the turbo is OK and the problem is further back. That's a start anyways.

take off the oil fill cap and start it see how much
blow buy its got, thay all have a little if its a
lot you might have lost a piston and liner
if not to much blow buy but has a miss in it
you might have lost an injector
that will make it miss and smoke
in a cat it will make all kinds of sounds
make sure what is comming out of the exhaust
fuel or oil

Yeah, the first thing I did was pull the turbo off, and there was still oil coming from the exhaust manifold..
I finally managed to pull the manifold off in preperation for removing the front head... (They sure didn't design it to be easy either) It looks like the oil is coming from the 2nd and 3rd cylinder in, since those exhaust ports are the only ones with oil in them..
I am still working on getting the head off, it is a slow go..

It is definately engine oil for sure...

I am suspecting a piston myself, but I shall see once I get the head off..

I am in SW Washington, does anyone out there know of anyone around here that works on these engines? So far the diesel shops don't seem eager to touch them.. Does the Army make housecalls? lol

Thanks for you help..

Dan..

It ended up being a sleeve.. I was told that this could be replaced in the truck, without taking the engine all the way apart.. Got the parts coming from Clark Truck Parts..

I'm attempting the repair myself.. If anyone has done this and can throw any advice my way, I'd appreciate it..

Thanks..

Any updates? I'm having exactly the same problem with mine. Oil out the stack and loud clacking sound. I haven't taken anything apart yet but will hopefully get to that this weekend if it doesn't rain.
