How do I find Technical or parts manuals?

I have a Deuce fire truck and an XM818 5 ton tractor. I have needed manuals for both and have done searches for them. I was not able to find them. As far as the deuce goes. helpful members came to my rescue. As for the 5 ton, I have not sought help, but I need them. I believe I am doing somethning wrong with my searching because I have not been able to find the manuals in our rerference section. I need the operator's manual for the 1971 XM818 tractor. I would really appreciate the manual, but would really like a little help regarding finding it on this site. This is aterrific source and I could not imagine trying to own and run one of these beasts without the help of the members. Thank you

Been there and done that... I must be missing something because I cannot find a search function in there and I have a hard time seeing the white letters on a light beige background. Not anybody's problem but my own... guess my eyes ain't what they used to be. (but then... nothing really is, is it?) Thank you for the help.

Also, I see where there are several different versions of a manual. Do I seek the one that gets close to my truck build date or get the latest (ie highest final number of the series) I would like to understand a little more about these manuals and going about finding them. Thanks

That's a good question. Unfortunately, there is not such a search. Someone would have to sit down and think up all the possible questions/searches a user might have, then go through the manuals and figureout which TM & chapter they were in for a search to work. For now, you will simply need to guess. The names of the TM's give a good hint as to what info they hold.

Another good question. The newest manuals will have the newest, most up-to-date info but sometimes, the older manuals have better, more complete descriptions of the process.

With all the manual series; the -10s are the operator's manuals. The -20s get you into troubleshooting and minor repairs. -34s are higher level repairs. Anything ending in P (-20P, -24P are parts breakdowns.

Once you get your nose into the right general area you're in for some reading as the material doesn't always seem to have a rhyme or reason. I've found the how-to's in one manual but a small blurb on specialty tooling or items that make the job faster and safer in another section.

The last 2 # I.E. -10 are a level of maintance code 10 being user , -20 is work the unit that ownes the truck would do , -30 is work that the unit would send the truck off for and -40 is work that a depot would do.
That being said a-12 is both -10 and -20 books in one a -34 would be both -30 and -40
and -14 would be all the books in one.
Now if it like -20-1 It means the book is to big to be in 1 book and maybe 2 or 3 or 4 books and you would need all of them.

If you look at the dash of the truck on the pass side there is a data plate that tells you the TM numbers for that truck.

The 530B fire truck in your avarta takes TM 5-4210-213-12. This TM cover the fire truck add on stuff. For most of the stuff you still need the TM 9-2320-361-__ and/or TM 9-2320-209-__.

Now there is also TM 9-2320-386-__ that is for the new M35A3's and does NOT work for the M35A2 trucks.

You have received good information (or at least as good as there is...) for the original question. As far as eyes that aren't what they used to be, start your mouse in the upper right of the page (or section of the page) that you are looking for, click and drag to the lower left. thus highlighting the whole thing. Almost always you will find that the highlighted version is easier to read.

Here's something no one mentioned. One of the data plates lists the appropriate manuals for the truck it's on. Now armed with the manual numbers one can scroll through the TMs and get what you need. TM= Tech Manual. 2320= wheeled truck, XXX= series (see below) and -10 Operator (-20 maint, -34 overhaul, -20P and -34P parts).

Series;

These are a few off the top of my head.

209= deuce (circa 60s and 70s)
361= deuce (circa 70s to present)
211- M39 5 tons
260= M809 5 tons

Much more to learn but this gets you started.

Hey Recovry4X4 I did mention it. But good point on the truck codes IE 209,260ect.

As for the daul breaks check the newest copys of the -361 I think it is dated 2006 or the -386 I think it's for the new M35A3's but the daul breaks are the same.
