M1031 identification

I recently purchased a pickup with maintenance body on back(generator/compressor). The door tag states M1028, how do I know for sure if it is a 1028 or 1031? Has 205 case. Has no glove box either, has some kind of switch in the glove box hole. Thanks!
By the way I have been gone for a while, good to be back and to get me another CUCV!

Recovery hit it on the head. If it has a gas driven generator for the welder, then it's a M1028 with a Dodge M887 box on it. If the generator is PTO driven, then it's a M1031. You might also be able to look on the box right behind the drivers cab and see what the data plate says about the box.

The M1031 has a PTO driven Generator off of the transfer case. If it doesn't have that it is an M1028.

What's your reasoning behind needing to know? It was pointed out, look for the NP205 tcase if you want a PTO generator. I would also jack the front end up to see if it has the LSD front diff. These were the goodies I wanted.

The 205 case only came in M1031 and M1028A1 and M1028A2 trucks. Not sure how many of the latter two were actually factory built, but I seem to remember seeing a factory built A1 before. I think most A2s were conversions. My A1 was converted from a M1031.

With that said, there really is no big difference between an M1031 and a M1028A1, except the type of bed and, in the case of a Contact Maintenance truck, the PTO and high-idle control stuff to drive the generator/welder.

ALL m1031s were Cab/chassis to start with and have a B as the third digit in the serial number. M1028a1s and M1028a2s are conversions and will also have a B as the third digit. All should have a NP205 transfer case. The civilian era K30 pickup OR Cab/Chassis from 1986 would have had a NP205 transfer case also, not a NP208, like the M1008 or M1028.

So, just to be accurate, not *ALL* M1028A1s are conversions... Mine is, and I suspect most were, but this is one of two data plates that I have pictures of with the correct NSN and a VIN without the "B".

Aha! there's one in every crowd. SO, "Most" m1028a1s then are conversions, but not all. The two I have at present both are conversions.

I know that all of the M1028A2 duallys and M1028A3 duallys were converted from single wheel trucks. The A2 was from and A1 and the A3 from an M1028. What was converted into the M1028A1? Did they swap in an NP205 for the 208? This is the first I'm learning of trucks converted into an M1028A1.

I don't think it would have been practical to convert by swapping the t-case, although I can't actually prove otherwise.

This is interesting! Let me ask, does the converted truck have a rotating or fixed pintle hook? I have heard that M1031 trucks have a fixed pintle.

I think the OP has gone on a walkabout!

The M1031 does have the fixed non rotational pintle hook. I removed the hook from mine. And the others I had also had the fixed position hook. I always wondered what the rhyme and reason was.

All of this banter is great but to me...who cares. Peek up the skirt for an NP205, jack the front end to look for an LSD. It has them...great! Carry on with life and stop worrying about the digit in the ID number. Unless you are looking for some period correct numbers matching show truck it has no bearing unless you are looking for a generator truck with a gas unit.
