Need some help with Parking Brake issue

So my parking brake hasn't been holding the truck on an incline for a while and I decided to adjust it today. I found the shoe liners are shot and I also found that the "outer shoe return spring" (?) is just leaning against the bracket that the adjusting bolt threads into. Also found that the jam nut on the adjusting bolt is missing and the threads on the adjusting bolt are worn out wallowing around without the jam nut.

I know I have to get new shoes, new adjusting bolt and jam nut. BUT how & what does this spring attach to? The TM doesn't show in great detail how the top end of the spring attaches.

I have attached a pic I took with my iPhone so I don't know how large it will be when viewed.

Oh yeah, I learned the iPhone makes a great inspection mirror for places you can't get your Mellon up into.

The spring in your picture, does not look correct. here's a picture from the -20TM.

There are 3 springs on the parking brake system. With all three in place and properly adjusted shoes, the P brake should function quite well.

There should be what looks like a heavy cotter pin that goes through that are that the cable pulls on. That spring attaches there.

The spring in your picture does not look correct for any of the 3 needed springs.

A look through the -20Ptm will show you all the springs and where they connect.

Hmmmm..... I see in the drawing that the spring shows to have a loop the bolt goes through. Here's a pic of the spring out of the truck. Both ends actually look like the wire was broke at some point or the manufacture process didn't leave a clean cut, prob the later. So guess I need to add a new spring to the parts list. Any idea right off where to get one?

When fixing it make sure they both move on the pivot points freely. Both of mine were frozen and took heating, beating and penetrating oil to free up. After I got them apart I cleaned it all up and used some high temp antisieze.

Yes Also I do not see the other spring in your picture. It goes between the brake arm lever and the frame.

Climbed under mine. sorry for the bad pic's its dark and I just pointed and shot a few. Don't know if its correct or not, but think it shows the spring to frame DH mentioned.

Great pic LB, that shows both springs.

The third spring is called a "moustache" spring. It's at the lower pivot pionts(about 4 o-clock position)

If you don't want to buy new shoes, there is a company in Lexington that can re-line them. I can't find the invoice from our XM817, but I'll keep looking for the name.

It is around Commercial Drive, somewhere.

Re-lining is a great option as the parking brake shoes are awful expensive. I have only one or two new sets remaining for my trucks.

In this pic I think you can see the other spring and that I need to reline too. My Dad used to get our dirt bike shoes done with thicker linings when the hubs were worn. Gotta see how much it costs, but it must be cheaper than new shoes.

The other two springs are there and the pivots are smooth and easy to move by hand and showed signs of regular greasing when I greased the whole truck before Haspin this summer.

If you find the receipt of the place in Lexington let me know. I mat pull the shoes off tomorrow and take them home with me and see if I can get them relined next week.

If the threaded end of the cable is hitting the crossmember, carefully cut off the end so you can adjust the cable tighter if need be. I have see brand new cables with the threaded end too long to make a proper adjustment and they had to be cut just to get a preliminary adjustment.

I just thought you should know that can be an issue.

JATONKA has the mustache springs if you need one.

I see Saturn has a E-Brake Relining Kit that has the liners and rivets. Do I need a special rivet tool for these or just any old brake rivet tool will do? If I could find the tool at a reasonable cost I may go that route. But for $30 more they have the shoes with liners.

Eh scratch that. Called Saturn and they dont have the liner kits anymore. They did have the spring I need, so I just ordered one and a e-brake shoe kit.
