My issue similar to the original post. The master switch doesn't turn off the truck. If the batteries are connected, everything is powered on regardless of the position of the master switch which makes me _suspect_ a relay issue. Failed in the closed position. I hope it's that simple, but...
Thank you for the prompt reply, on a holiday no less! Hopefully, I can things sorted out enough to get it home on the next trip. Once in MY driveway, this all gets a bit easier. ;-)
Gentlemen, I'm working to get a M1078 A0 back up on its feet and home. The current owner was kind enough to purchase new batteries (8Ds) for it. Everything electrical worked for a bit, then one of the batteries crapped out. (Batteries+ stood behind it and replaced it. Kudos to them.) Now...
For the record, I don't own an FMTV (yet). I follow this forum because I would like one and want to get informed. Also, I'm sure I'll regret commenting on this. At this point for me, it's just an interesting physics problem.
I have read the gearing tutorial, and bookmarked it. Thanks for...
Look at the diagram...
The black wire from the switch goes to ground. It has been my experience that black wires on my M1009 are generally ground. Obviously, that is a generalization that should be confirmed with the appropriate diagram in every case.
The diagrams can be a little...
The TM instructions worked for me...
On my M1009, the knockout wasn't obvious, but when I looked carefully I was able to find it. Scoring the edges of the knock out with a cold chisel seemed to help get it popped out.
One came off without backing off the star nut. FWIW, when I had that one...
Only 12 volts to the glow plugs...
No. If you want to use the 24 volts, you need the stock resistor pack or equivalent. If you are not using the stock resistor, leave the glow plug power source at 12 volts. I'm pretty certain that powering 12 volt glow plugs with 24 volts will toast them in...
UncleSam, I apologize for taking your straightforward repair thread off into the weeds. That was not my intention. FWIW, I made the mod from Warthog step #2 last weekend. Working fine. The wire supplying the stud from the battery is not even slightly warm while the glow plugs are cycling...
Doghead & Warthog,
Thanks for alleviating my concerns. Using the terminal block is simpler and will look nicer.
Doghead, if you point to illuminating information, I'll read it and try to absorb. Just because I don't understand doesn't mean I don't want to.
Both of you have a great weekend!
Thanks for the response. However, that's not my question.
The amperage load on the front battery from running the glow plugs as Warthog sets up the system should be roughly the same as the load with the stock configuration using the resistor pack. His modification will not increase the draw...
Question for Warthog regarding step #2...
Warthog,
Regarding step #2, I've been contemplating removing the resistor from the glow plug circuit on my M1009 as well and going to 12V. A number of threads have mentioned feeding the glow plug relay from the terminal block you reference.
This may...
Balancer change...
I just did mine and posted some notes:

The whole thread is pretty good. Actually, there are a number of other good threads on the topic.
The torque for the bolt is 200 ft-lb as per the TM.
On a...
