update (long overdue) ended up replacing the entire starter with a new one, after all it was still under warranty.
the replacement cranks and starts every time.
When starting the post, the background color is white and text is black - I did not change anything and left it as default.
Just now I changed the text color to white - which makes it invisible in edit mode :-(
When starting the Unimog very frequently (4 out of 5 times) I am getting just a glonking sound, seems the solenoid is not engaging fully and the starter motor would not turn.
At first I thought it was a grounding issue, since I installed a new (rebuild) starter, but now after the same issue...
Update (sorry for the delay) I ended up deciding for the original M180 and abandon the E300 conversion.
The M180 engine I got had most of the missing parts I needed and is now in place. Some of the cooling hoses I had to make.
The current state is the Unimog has a running engine - but have not...
am back on the project. Had to get the F300 rebuild and it's almost done. Good for a try-fit of the adapter plate to check on the hole pattern and the cutout location for the starter.
And found out that the hole pattern of the flywheel is not quite matching. holes are off by about 1/64". A small...

If so, do I need to open the other end of the short axle when installing the shaft again, or does it slip right in place when pushing it in?
