Saw that thread and actually read quite a few pages before I even bid on my truck. Didn't make it to the tranny swap apparently, oops. Thanks for the heads up on what you would do differently.
I did a quick search but didn't see anything. Has anyone done a comprehensive, documented thread on swapping a 13 speed into a 917? I would love to read it if someone has and if not I should create one as I go if I go that route.
Now we're talking, I don't need to run at 90 but if it CAN run 90 I'm not burning so much mucho expensive fuel at 70. Besides, sometimes you need the extra oomph to quickly get past those damn swift trucks governed at 64.
61 huh, maybe this tranny being out isn't such a bad thing. If it was an easy fix ( clogged oil pick up, leaky air line etc) as I have seen before on other things. It's state property and one stupid little thing breaks, they call it junk and auction it. Have to see what kind of speed upgrade I...
I don't know whom this Fred guy is but from what I have read around here I don't like him much. If you aren't gonna do it right just get the hell out of the job.
True, but I do hate parting out things and to do it to what is still a very clean truck...I just couldn't. If I'm gonna sell its because as cool as it is, and it's really cool it doesn't fit a purpose well enough to hang around sucking up some of my finite amount of parking. Can't really tell...
That's certainly an option if I want to stay stock. Pop in a rebuild and then properly tear down this tranny, assess it's condition and rebuild as a spare if all generally looks well.
Can't say I have cracked open any triple countershaft tranny's before. Still trying to figure out what exactly I want this truck to do in it's end use. Wasn't really looking for one but when it comes up locally and cheap enough to gamble some play money on... I sold my regular civvie tri-axle...
Ah, well it was just a guess. With the teeth shaped shading stained onto there it looks a lot like a spacer for between the fiber discs on a dozer steering clutch. Anyway, looks like it's not a lot of fun changing it along with whatever lost so many teeth when it failed. Hmm, now I need to...
So yeah, it's been feeling more like Florida than Massachusetts the last few weeks. Finally took the PTO off to replace the screen and with it out of the way I can reach into the rear half of the tranny....While I haven't consulted a manual yet a pile of teeth ( not all pictured) and a shattered...
Success!!! It can indeed be removed from the passenger side pto plate. Reinstalling however....I think I'm just going to pull the PTO. If you have one of these tranny's and feel like cleaning that screen as you should per the pm I would strongly advise just pulling the PTO on the first place...
Once again ponway you come through with the info. I stuck my arm up in there yesterday, both actually, could feel those rolled edges. Without being able to see and having yanked, tugged, pushed and contorted myself in every possible way i was about ready to throw in the towel, seal it back up...
