I see. That is likely due to the oil not having a C rating.
I see no reason other than that. 10w40 falls neatly between a 10w30 and 15w40.
I would not hesitate to use a 10w40 or 5w40 of modern oil, in my CUCV, provided it was S\C rated.

Oil has more to do with the sum of its parts, than just one or two components. Todays oil has less detergency that competes less with the anti wear components, therefore, the antiwear items can be less ppm, and do more.
Ill check it out on the bottle of 10w40. I noted that on the Mobil site. 10w40 is a great all aorund choice, no matter what they say today with their 0w8,16 BS.

You are 100% correct on USA marketing. This is why Mobil has the FS line, and others have a Euro line. You will see "FS" on the from of the bottle. All others are blends.
