Pin hole leak in the transmission oil cooler

Hello All,

So right when I finished swapping batteries and installing a new front passenger seat. Started the truck, truck started up well. I did, however, spring a leak. A leak in my transmission oil cooler, see pics above.

My question is can I seal this pinhole leak with an aluminum weld? What is my best option to proceed?

1) Please upload pictures to this forum and don't use links. Links disappear with time leaving future users at a loss.

2) Replace the oil/tranny cooler unit. I just had a similar issue. Mac Motors sells the part. About 600 clams.

Answer to question NO. What part shown is aluminium? Fins yes, tubing rusted, NO. Not aluminum, steel. Check it with a magnet. Remove and replace $$$$ or pull it out., clean it up real REAL good and see what you really have going on. Good radiator shop should handle it for less $ IMO. Then get the stress off the connections. Check for fluid loss. Looks like there is a trail from your last trip.

And I get the friendly storytime set up... BUT why is it here on SS questions start out going down the rabbit hole? Right after swapping batteries, new chushie seat, started truck and now a leak. It's a old and tired HumV. Your just that lucky guy today.

Is it a trick or smoke screen. I'am old and tired too, Cranky CAMO

I would remove it and bring it to an old school radiator shop and have them evaluate. It has to come out anyway and most shops would evaluate and give you an estimate upfront. Based on that opinion would be where my $ go.....
All the cooling things on these hmmwv's are way overpriced imho but what are you going to do.... :-(

You can replace it now or waste a bunch of time and money and then still need to replace it later.

I priced out replacing with aftermarket vs. replacement and for that capacity it was only a few bucks less. Not worth it. Trying to repair rusted rotted steel is probably a setup for failure.

I chose to replace. I need this rig for Winter driving and I don’t need to break down in the middle of nowhere and get frost bitten because I cheaped out.

What is safety worth to you?

So I purchased and installed after a huge problem with a stripped bolt. Anyone got the specs on the 4 bolts that hold this in place and/0r know where I can find them

Sorry, multi-tasking. Got the new oil cooler installed after one hell of a battle with a stripped bolt. Now that it's installed and connected, I need to get new bolts to secure it. Thus, I am loooking for 4 new replacement bolts. Would any of you gentlemen have the specs on the oem bolts?

Take one out and shoot a picture or a better description of what you need. Nuts and bolts ... head down to your fav hardware store, if not to picky or an OEM guy. Here's the TM that might help > https://www.hmmwvinscale.com/HMMWV TM -24P.pdf

Look around page 90 , as I am not going to guess or do your home work. Good time to learn the uses of the TM's should the internet go down.

turbo, non REV uses (4) 5/16 - 18 x 2.00 shouldered bolts
REV gets (4) 3/8 - 16 x 2.50 shouldered bolt with special washers

Interesting as my truck had (2) with 1/2 in length and (2) with 2-1/2 in length. Who knows what happens in the motor pool. :)
