What's the best way to slowly turn an engine over by hand in a 6.5L n/a hummer? I know I can "find" a way to do it but I'm sure there is a best practice where I won't strip or break something in the process.
Steel Soldiers now has a few new forums, read more about it at: New Munitions Forums!
Pull the glow plugs and put a big wrench on the "lugs" on the back side of the dampener on the front of the crank. "Should" turn pretty easy. My 2 cents. What's the best way to slowly turn an engine over by hand in a 6.5L n/a hummer? Yes, there are timing marks on the harmonic balancer, the pointer is on the drivers side below the PS pump. That sounds pretty straight forward- thanks.
Okay, follow up question knowing that I don't have my HMMWV near me at the moment: Are there any marks/lines/dots/etc. on the crank pulley or harmonic balancer that I can use to tell which cylinder is TDC? Or is it easy to tell by looking/probing down the GP hole when a cylinder is TDC?
So a quick follow up as I was finally able to spend time on my 1097R1 this long weekend. I pulled the glow plugs after a few curse words as the one on the front left of the engine ( #1 cylinder , right?) was a bit swollen and required some vice grips and prying. As least I had a lot of work room on this glow plug because if it was anyone on the right side I probably would have been in a bad spot. I'll probably just buy new set to be on the safe side but that's another story.Pull the glow plugs and put a big wrench on the "lugs" on the back side of the dampener on the front of the crank. Yup, serpentine belt. Big socket time, should turn pretty easy.So a quick follow up as I was finally able to spend time on my 1097R1 this long weekend. As for hand turning the engine, I quickly realized we might be talking about different setups. I have the 4 v-belt set up and there is no way to grab anything on the damper or pulley.

I assume the lugs you're referring to are on a serpentine belt set-up? I found this pic on GP website for 1097A2.

So, with a v-belt set up, I assume the only way to easily hand bar the engine is either a socket on the cranky pulley or maybe even a socket on the alternator pulley. I ran out of time to try after futzing with the swollen gp so still need to figure out how to easily bar the engine.
Thoughts?
WILCO. I'll go slow.Yup, serpentine belt. Big socket time, should turn pretty easy.
