I use 303 Products Aerospace Protectant on my spare tire. Appears to work.

The best protectant for leaks is to snug the top on well so water doesn't pool. If that's not possible, regular cleaning and treating with Starbrite helps.

I just wanna point out that some people will paint their canvas with Behr paint to go from one color to the next.
Behr paint being an outdoor paint will also protect the top.
