I recently started to swap out with a sealed in crate injection pump. I aligned the timing mark on the balancer and the two marks on the pump per the TM. I checked to make sure the number one cylinder was at TDC by checking both rockers could be moved indicating the valves are closed. I held the pump timing mark in place while adjusting the gear. After I started it up it sounded horrible.
It was recommended that the pump was installed 180 degrees out of time. I removed the gear then rotated to the next timing mark. Upon checking the valves they appeared to be in the overlap position. Could the army depot have rebuilt the pump incorrectly? Or what might cause the motor to sound like this?
I also checked the valve lash according to the TM. And making sure intake 0.013, exhaust 0.028. could NOT fit under the rockers. Or do I need to use a tighter tolerance?
