Hi @az-bengal the HVLP system stands for "High Volume Low Pressure," whether to go with HVLP or Syphon is generally up to personal preference as they each have their own benefits and drawbacks.

The spray systems available for rent at Home Depot are likely intended solely for painting houses and most likely would not be compatible with our paint. We have never put our paint through a latex sprayer, but I would not recommend trying it. Harbor Freight sells a few different options of both HVLP and Syphon spray guns for as low as 20-30 dollars, HVLP being the cheaper of the two. They also sell small portable compressors if you have limited space available for one.

I HATE (many) of Heartburn Freight 's tools.........but I have had great success with all of the air tools that I have purchased from them. I have a little air paint sprayer that I have used on a Gama Goat taking 1 gallon of Gillespie paint, 1/4 mix w/ Xylene and got @ 2-2 1/2 coats. Less than half a gallon for a Mule w/ maybe 3 coats and so far, less than a half gallon for 2-2 1/2 coats on an M151. I really like their paint and the same for my Harbor Freight paint sprayer.

Welcome Aboard Rapco! I too have used quite a bit of the Gillespie paint for several generators, trailers and power plant refurb projects.... great stuff!
For @AZ Bengal , I suspect most / all hand held electric sprayers will have a hard time atomizing the paint sufficiently. The bigger airless sprayers will probably work fine, but the amount of paint that will be wasted in the pump, hose and gun , plus clean-up effort make it somewhat impractical for small jobs. I own a couple high end Sata paint guns, but will admit that the cheap HVLP guns available on Ebay for $30 are more than sufficient for the task. I've used the cheapies for priming and spraying equipment etc. for years and reserve the "good" guns for the base/clear finish work.
I prefer ebay guns over H-Freight because they are cheaper, come with several size tips and usually have a larger cup. If you mess up the gun bad, throw it away and buy another! No big deal!

The HF sprayer I use is a bottom syphon feed. It wasn't very expensive, or I wouldn't have bought it. I do use a compressor that has a little air dryer thingy that helps suck off moisture and it also gives a constant pressure for use. It works great and cleanup is easy.

The sprayer I use is a Central Pneumatic make (probably HF generic name brand at the time), 20 fl. oz., high volume, low pressure, gravity feed, top fill, 40 psi. I'm sure it wasn't very expensive, or I wouldn't have bought it and probably thought I might end up throwing it away. It works great, cleanup is easy, I'd guess I've had it for 10 or 12 years and it's going strong. I also use an air compressor that has a constant pressure setting for tools and it has an inline air dryer on it to help keep moisture out of the mix.
I don't know what you are painting, but I'd suggest ordering at least a case of rattle can paint also to use for the parts you need to hit, but don't want to break out the air sprayer. Also I'd err on the side of ordering more paint than you think you need, just in case. I have some of the red primer and regular paint that are @ 8 years old and they work like brand new. I go thru a lot of rattle cans doing touch up, little parts, etc.

Transmission parts arrived past 2 days, some still in unopened packs dated 1952. Will be busy getting them prepped over next few days. Will do research on this and follow up with you later. Thanks for details.

The cheap HVLP guns I've used were $30 on ebay, 1Liter gravity feed cup ( 33 oz ) and come with 1.4 1.7 and 2.0 mm tips.
I prefer the bigger cup simply for more capacity, but the taller cup may get in the way if you're painting underneath and inside things.
I purchased one originally as a cheap replacement for a broken HVLP turbine system I was using strictly for primer, but for $30 it actually sprayed just as good as guns I've used costing over $500, and it has held up pretty well for a good 6-8 years now.
I prefer the gravity feed because they typically can handle higher viscosity primers and single stage paints than a siphon feed can, and the 3 tips allow better volume control for everything from thin basecoats , medium viscosity clears and single stage to heavy primers.
Also, the last siphon feed HVLP gun I had used a pressurized cup and any leaks around the cup seal ( due to my laziness cleaning my primer gun thoroughly ) would cause difficulty holding pressure, which caused obvious material flow problems.
