I got really close to makin g it all happen! Built two crazy cars in the meantime, just to cover shop rent, now I'm a few parts away from finishing it and the uppity fire marshall is causing trouble at the complex I rent my shop from, and they're kicking everyone out, so I'm selling the FSO6406...
It took a couple hours to trim the flywheel housing up. I'm pulling the LDT housing off tonight but building the brackets to adapt the LDS housing doesn't look too hard. Looks like I might end up moving the driver's side mount back 4 inches on the frame though, to clear the starter.
I like...
There are SAE#3 bellhousings for the Allison 1000 so the transmission will bolt to the factory SAE#3 adaptor that came on the LDT465. You'd just need to find the right torque converter, and have the stock flywheel machined to bolt to it.
Figuring out the correct spacing between the flywheel...
The engineer in me doesn't like the fact that that adapter is aluminum and as thin as it is normally seeing that the whole weight of the transmision is hanging off of it. The Fuller FSO6406 is probably another couple hundred pounds heavier than a 3053 and quite a bit longer too.
I'm leaning...
If there's a relatively inexpensive way to go from the LDT non SAE pattern to a SAE#2 clutch housing, I'd love to know. There are only SAE#2 clutch housings available for the six and seven speeds that are the best matches for these trucks, and most of the bigger Allison stuff I've seen out...
Sorry if its been covered or suggested. I've been reading my eyes out lately, but will this flywheel help you? It was used in the m656 xm757 to mount an Allison behind a LDS465-2

Yep. It's very difficult to mount anything but a 3053/3052 to a LDT. I thought, "I'll just build new mounts and use a LDS flywheel housing..." Nope. It offcenters the motor towards the passenger side and tilts it 84 degrees towards the driver's side. I'd have to redo my fan shroud, upper...
I considered a brownie in my deuce bus, but ended up with a Fuller six speed.
I'd love to see a build thread on yours. Coming up with a zero torsion subframe to mount the bus body on mine was quite a challenge.
I promise I'll turn this into a proper build thread with good pics and a coherent post with part numbers once I figure this all out. I'm sure there are others that might want to do a LDS/Fuller six speed swap out there.
I came to a major realization today. The FSO6406a isn't available with an...
I did more research after this post and it looks like a 62mm od bearing gets pushed into the flywheel on 5 ton applications, which is cool. Now I just need to find a bellhousing and figure out if the 5 ton release bearing setup will work.
Can confirm for sure. I'm just finding this out the hard way. I got a LDS motor, but it looks like they put a LDT crank in at some point because it has the .750 id bronze bushing instead of the 30mm id bearing listed for the 5 ton. I always thought the motors used the same crank. I was...
My trans just says 3053, no "a" or "b", and it's an English one. Whatever the gearing is, 5th with the transfercase in low gets me to the exact same speed as third in high, so the gap is huge no matter what. My last two trucks weren't nearly so bad.
The engines must be offset towards the passenger side in the 5 tons. Firewall clearance will become an issue too if I use the LDS housing.
I picked up a Fuller FS5306 core yesterday and have a big pile of gears, bearings, and synchros to order, but when I'm done, it will basically be a...
The six speed is happening. The 3 to 4 gap is the most annoying thing about a deuce, and my 3053 is rusty inside and under rated for an LDS anyway. There's no flat roads anywhere near me. I'm either climbing grades on the highway, or on the trails. It seems like the only gear I actually need...
The LDS bellhousing has the SAE#2 pattern that I want long term, but its mounts are laid out completely different for the 5 ton application. The LDT housing without the adapter is closer to SAE #1, but with an oddball pattern. It would be nice to use the LDT bell and stock mounts, but I'd have...
