Glow plug relay output voltage & manual button hold duration

Well it turns out that we assumed wrong, the seemingly identical relay we bought to replace the 'broken' old one is NOT the same. It turns out that the relay we removed was an isolated ground unit, and it has 0 resistance whilst active so it seems to be absolutely fine. The replacement that...

Glow plug relay output voltage & manual button hold duration

Thet ain't raht, but see below. All is forgiven! :D Yeah, that is very weird. I have to wonder if you have the correct relay. Check for continuity from any of the terminals to ground. There should NOT be any. You must use an isolated ground relay. See the sticky for the correct relay...

Glow plug relay output voltage & manual button hold duration

...with a hodgepodge of someone else's wiring combined with a system I'm still learning about. It's possible wiring it up incorrectly killed the glow plug card, but the fact that the original relay tests fine with a 12v power source suggets that the relay was never the problem to start with.

Glow plug relay output voltage & manual button hold duration

The GP card has a couple of variable inputs that determine the duration of the glow plug heating time. The colder the engine is, the longer it keeps the Wait light on, the warmer the engine is, the shorter the wait duration. The GP card also provides the after glow heating of the glow plugs...

Glow plug relay output voltage & manual button hold duration

...later with a 12v power supply and it works fine. The WAIT light stopped working entirely now. So it's not the relay, seems like the glow plug card is toast. Wired up a manual glow plug button for testing purposes between a 12v source and the blue wire on the relay, and that does work...

(The engine would stay running with the key off until this switch was flipped to off) There was no glow plug card at all, and most of the wiring leading to the GP card was cut. I have reconnected all the like wires together. New GP card from hillbilly wizard is...

    Resistor fire

Yea, After I sense a hard start, I check the glow plugs first. I have found 1 glow plug can make the difference. Most times it is 2 glow plugs. I once had the engine ingest a glow plug at highway speed. I did not know what happened at the moment. It was 90* and I was on the interstate. It tapped...

    Glow Plug System Video

I always wondered how the glow plug card knew when the engine started, now I know how! My truck needs new plugs as the system works but doesn't like to start when it's below 40 or so...one more thing to add to the list of parts! It really is a simple setup that works very well.

    Glow Plug System Video

As a newbie to CUCVs (and auto mechanics in general), I have tried to use all available resources to help me problem solve issues. All of you here have been extremely helpful with insight and wisdom. During a random search today, I found the video (link below) that someone took a lot of time to...

    Glow Plug Grounding Issue

*Update* It was indeed the Glow Plug Card. I exchanged it: once I installed the New one I immediately could see the ground bulb light up. No problems ever since!! A Huge thanks to @Rocknus (Johnny) & @Squibbly. I’d be lost without the input. Thank You all! Thank You!! Sent from my...

    Glo Plug Solenoid Help

Marcus, I will check all of the continuity checks you listed in the morning when I can see. This has been such a pain in my A-- that i ready your reply and went and checked for the 6 prong grounding post. There is nothing attached to any of the 6 prongs, only the one wire that is attached to...

    Glo Plug Solenoid Help

Okay, sounds good. Now, are you checking for power when the wires are connected? If so, it makes sense that the blue wire would show 12v. That's because it's connected through the coil to the small red (pink) wire, and when the GPs are not activated, its other end is connected to nothing...

    Glo Plug Solenoid Help

...connected. The solenoid (109 as seen in the picture) that was in the truck when I got it had bypassed the original glow plug system (glow plug card) and was activated by a push button in the cab. The Napa 109 had the pink wire attached, but only the red wire, the glow plug harness they put...

Squibbly's M1009 and other Questionable Projects

What was the part # and or vendor for your new vacuum pump. I'm having late shift issues with my 1009 as well.

So all of your shifts points are good and you did not have to adjust the vacuum regulator! Amazing, I adjust mine to shift at 15 mph and 30-35 miles per hour. It gives you good firm shifts. I believe soft shifting is not good for these transmissions. Happy Days, good job.

    Glow Plug Grounding Issue

That fuse controls: The seat belt buzzer, dash lights for the temperature, low coolant, brake and water-in-fuel. This fuse also supply's power to the GP controller via circuit 39G (diagram E-7). If any of those are shorted or have bad connections it can blow a fuse, so you've got to hit the TMs...

    Glow Plug Grounding Issue

...in. I turned it on and it worked for a second then turned off and wouldn’t work. The next day or so I did a few more tests for the Glow Plug Card Holder. The Seatbelt buzzer wasn’t working and neither were some of the dash lights. Sure enough the No. 17 (20 amp) fuse was blown. So I replaced...
