I noticed that the inside of my slave port was turning green from the salt on the roads. I cleaned it out and applied a liberal amount or dielectric grease inside it and found a soft vinyl cap around the shop from the front wheel hub off a lawn tractor. Fits on nice and snug.
My 1008 has been doing double duty for work and I have received several compliments from customers whose eq we have to pickup and deliver. So far only had to cycle the GP's twice , once when it was zero.

I would replace the fuel filter, clean the glass ball on top of the IP, run some diesel clean . Do the Doghead starter relay mod as a preventive measure

Mine was smoking at oil fill also, had a bad head gashet and cracked head, after repairing and a few oil changes no smoke/ steam.
Some type of heat source under the engine.You could use silicone spray in the intake. Mine started right up in 20 degree weather after sitting 3 weeks, today was the first tine I had to cycle the plugs twice , it was 4 degrees.
