Can you lock out the surge brake on a M416A1? What's this hole?

By all means, use a hardened hitch pin, or at least a Grade 8 bolt. Locking out the brakes is part of the program for surge brakes. The pin should be handy too! You seldom need it on Highway driving, but you might in sand, snow, mud, or as you mentioned, backing uphill.

    PTO seal kit?

I just finished up putting a new clutch in my Deuce. While I was at it, and the tranny was on the bench, I thought that I would put a seal kit in the PTO, on general perincilals - they weren't leaking, but it wasn't going to get any easier then now. Interesting Part: I have had this truck for...

    M35A2 spring with no home

Looks to be the clutch return spring. Rusty nailed it. It stretches a long ways, and griping it with a pair of vise grips, gives one a little more control. Its a little more crowded in there, when you have a PTO

A bit of oil in my M35A3 coolant

While I don't have an A3, I have had that problem several times in commercial trucks. The oil cooler intself, springs a leak - its not a gasket problem. Replacing the oil cooler, solves the problem. Then before I refilled with antifreeze, I refilled with plain water, added a whole box of...

replacing wood bows on M101 A2

On a couple of my trailers, the wood was getting old, and had sagged some from winter snows. It was still sound, so I just reversed them 180*, to put the bow up.

    Wreckerman pulls two trailers

The most important thing, when your stacking trailers, is to make sure the landing gear of the top trailer is sitting directly on top of a cross member, and not just on the deck boards. I have seen what happens, if they break through. Two is a good load. Three is top heavy, and you need to be...

Need Help with Oil Filter Identification

Could that be for the "Military Junior" filter housing? The two numbers for the Junior & Senior were P-51 & P-50 or visa versa. I always got the backwards. For instance the M-211 & the M-37 were two applications. By Purolater. I have them in the shop, I will look later.

Repair cracked oil pan drain plug

wb9btz reminds me. On anther leaking pan, they got the oil out of the engine, but didn't want to drop the pan. I welded that one, in place, but the oil residue inside the engine had enough oxygen to do enough of an explosion to blow the pan & valve cover gaskets out. This is one job, where...

Repair cracked oil pan drain plug

I'm doing a clutch on my truck, but came to the house a couple of hours ago - so I'm timed out. I can't remember what the pan looks like. Is the sump part of the pan, a two piece/bolt together? The short answer: drop the pan, and fix it, or replace it. You might think you get it stopped from...

    G177 Tire Pressures?

120 PSI is way too much for that little truck. That pressure is for maximun load too, and you can never approach it, especially with duals. DH's chart for Highway is more appropriate, but you could expiriment a little and even go 10 to 15 psi lower respectively. The fronts will be more...

In need of some input (first post!)

Welcome to the Forum. If you get a Deuce, your going to be learning a lot about them - that goes with the territory. Good Luck, with your notion about finding one that is "trouble free". Yes, they can be dependable, but often they have been subjected to extended deferred maintenance. Not...

    M105a2 Air hoses ID?

JP: Those RE Valves, are set up to deliver air to two axles at once. I suspect that you were looking at the "delivery" side of the valve, and not the Service/Emergency ports.

    24v relay

Sounds like the Relay was only rated to be actuated with 12V. As far as the switch part of the relay, as long as you don't exceed the current capacity of the switching part, it shouldn't care what the voltage is. How about using a small dedicated "voltage drop" to go from 24v to 12v to actuate...

    M105a2 Air hoses ID?

I whole heartedly agree with all above, especially KsM715's description of shop possibilities. Commercial Civi vehicles are plumbed : Left to Left; Right to Right. That is pretty simple, and I would try to keep things that way. Tracing the lines to that Relay/Emergency Valve is simple too...

How to grease the short drive shaft between trans an xfer case?

For general purpose, use a 3' hose on your grease gun. Then take the end that goes onto the zerk and carefully grind the end a little thinner, so its tapered. Then it fits in between the U-joint crosses better. Size is usually not a problem on the heavier trucks though. If you can put the...

    Speedo Keeps Stripping

Often those speedo problems are the drive cable itself being dry and causing too much load. Pull the inside cable, clean it 1st, then lube it with some light grease, as you re-insert it into the housing. Seems that you had to do that from the top end - unscrew it from the speedo, and pull it...

Airbrake hand controller 'Trolley valve' install assistance needed.

Zbd: In any system, as we know it today, the Service line, merely conveys a "signal", if you will, to the trailor/towed vehicle. That "signal" causes relay valves to open supplying the actual air, that does the actuial braking in the system. When the driver is done with the brakes, he returns...

Airbrake hand controller 'Trolley valve' install assistance needed.

That valve appears to be the same valve used in Civi applications, and has been around forever. Supply is just that. Delivery goes to the Service line to the trailer for the application of the trailer only brakes. Your correct in that a check valve then needs to be upstream of the joint into...
