Every M35A2 has a rod that comes out of the back of the transmission. Back in the early days, that rod was used in the sprag transfer case to set the correct direction for travel. Its purpose kind of faded when the M35A2's were all converted from sprag transfer cases to the air shift style...

The path is from the crankshaft bearing, down the shaft into the hole where the shaft, and keyway fit into the balancer, and out the bolt hole. It needs to be sealed, or it will leak. This is a very common place for a leak on almost all engines. -Chuck
