I was thinking upside down, too.
You would need to see the top and truck side by side to see the magnitude of the mismatch.
You would need two sheets of plywood across the bed to do right side up. Id do it that way upside down too to spread out the load.
1/4-20 is coarse thread. 1/4-28 is fine thread. Most common fine thread ive seen on these is 10-32. basically the next(common) size smaller fine thread.
Mine came without the disconnect.

Ive noticed that all the M1165s on GP have keyed ignitions installed...incorrectly.
They have the accessory position and they are clocked so when in "run" it is pointing at "start"

True. But now that these things are 20+ years old they are having issues with corrosion, damage, and unknown amounts of questionable maintenance that render that original grounding pathways less than adaquate
Another simple test to run is checking the voltage output from the batteries with the engine off, and from the generator when its running.
Just to confirm you are good there first.
I also agree that ground issues are likely with ALL the gauges geeking out randomly.

I don't think I could bring myself to recommend replacing a rear main seal that is NOT leaking...no matter how convenient. Just let the miracle happen.

Start by taking off the block off plates on the end of the frame. See whats in there.
Don't the mounting feet of the winch line up with those holes on the winch plate?
