I agree with twlinks, I recovered my M1009 myself trying to "save" money and by the time the 8 hour trip one way was complete I ended up spending as much as some of the shipping quotes were. I would definitely get some quotes and weigh that option.
I disagree with your friend. I have an 85 and have had no issues out of my 6.2. It cranks up on the first turn every time. You are correct, these vehicles are old and will take some love but with proper maintenance they can be and in my case are dependable. Now you are going to get responses...
