A rule of thumb for diesels is: wait till it's up to operating temperature. Also allows the trans oil to warm up some before putting the coal to it.

I think what Armytruck was referring to......in the event of strap/chain failure, it is safer to let it smack the bed, instead of taking a chance that it might fly through the windshield while pulling in reverse.

At idle it will warm somewhat, because you don't have the cold air blowing through the radiator.
