Also, test the purple with white tracer wire(under dash relay plug) for 12v when the key is in the start position. That is what triggers the relay.
You can simply splice it to the purple wire and eliminate the relay since you "converted" to 12 volts.
It is a bad idea to tap off of one battery for 12v when they are charged in series.
You will end up will a dead battery or both(the other one will overcharge)/

Individual charging the batteries is the best choice.
There is no need to disconnect anything while charging them(individually).
If you look hard enough(especially on the internet) you can find horror stories about anything.
I've owned several Gov-Lock diffs and even a couple Ford Pintos, none of which ever exploded.
If you lift the air shroud(above the IP), look in to the right at the throttle/governor linkage.
Did the spring fall down or off? It goes on a grooved fine adjust thingy in there.
