I must just be an "old fart" now,'cuse life is pretty sweet at 45mph! When I want to go faster I drive a different truck, pretty simple.
Slow down and enjoy the ride, life is about the journey - not the destination.
Here in Montana where CB is used extensively the locals get real upset when a Ham radio operator is on 12M (CB band/27mghz),it blows everybody out. If you want power and distance get a Ham license Technician class or even General class (HF bands).
All it takes is 2 guys with directional...
I know I'm a long ways off but I have all the steel strips that came off my trailer that need to go to a good home. They are in excellent condition, don't think they ever had a load on them. Someone told me these have the same specs as the chevy pickups from the 40s.
Installed a Newmar DC-DC converter under the bench seat, installed a Cobra 148 CB radio, Firestik antenna and a Rig-Runner 4 outlet power panel (w/ 2 USB outlets).
Next is;
The 5" LCD monitor (on a tip up mount) for the rear cameras.
ICOM M-7000 ham radio with AH-4 auto tuner and AH-4B...
The bed height is 5', the camper is 7 1/2', the skylights and solar panels add 6'' for a total of 13' +. the minimum bridge height around here is 13'6". (luckily all are by-passable for over height log trucks.)
Still it's a tall beast, but pulls easily - -- so far.
Home from Ohio (sunny, 85...
March update: The project has been on hold for the winter due to health problems, but now that spring is almost here in MT. I'll be finishing up the roof and siding before heading inside for the electrical and finish work. will post updated pics by the end of the month. I'm currently in...
Replacing the deck is easy, it's all carriage bolts. I completely removed the deck in 2 days with an air ratchet. I was able to salvage about 75% of the oak decking (heavily weather checked) and all the steel cargo strips in near perfect condition. With the deck off it's easier to R&R the wiring...
I went with the 24-12 vdc converter route coupled to 2 Optima yellow tops for the on board electronics. CB, Stereo, camera and alarm system. Liked it so well that I'm using a 2nd converter in my camper setup to run lights, stereo, alarm and Ham radio gear - this system is hooked up to 6 Optima...
Hey, the weather finally broke and the snow should hold for the next 2 days so I got busy on the roof and installed the flashing and the 6" insulated chimney for the wood stove.
I've included pics of the wood stove I just finished restoring, circa 1910. It will have the legs removed and be...
T-111 is a generic term for rough cut 4x8cdx plywood that has dadoo cuts to simulate planks.
In the south and mid-west most T-111 is plantation pine. Here in the NW it's usually doug fir - much better than sapwood pine for longevity. Current code also calls for a minimum ground clearance of...
When things get real cold I use JET A fuel mixed with the diesel. It's just very high grade kerosene and has a gel point of -28 degrees. It's what I use in all my oil lamps and old kerosene heaters.
Another benefit is that it has very little odor when burned in oil lamps and heaters. I'm...
Depending on where you're using this, you probably don't need the fridge. I spent 10 yrs living in a converted school bus while I worked the woods of the Pacific Northwest and used ice sparingly, what worked great was an army surplus aluminum mess pan that was used as a baker in the field ovens...
I plan on using 3/8 CDX over the interior insulation to stiffen the structure, that will be covered by paneling &/or T&G cedar.
The skylights I'm fabbing up myself, I'll post pics as they are built and installed.
Also the exterior CDX will be covered with t-111 siding, stained and sealed.
Oh...
Ok, the roof is finally on and all seams caulked. tomorrow the stove jack goes in and the roofing paper goes down. I still need to build the skylights this wknd and install them. Today was 40 degrees with a 20 - 25 mph wind gusting to 35 mph. I'm still thawing out.
I still haven't decided on the...
