    Prep for Winter operation.

I believe the risks of ndts on snowy/icy roads is overhyped. Last winter I drove my deuce with ndts hauling anywhere from 3 tons to empty. Just made sure to downshift a lot, give plenty of room to stop, and pump the brakes. I am in Michigans upper Peninsula where it snows 6 months of the year...

Brake Pedal Travel and Warm Hubs

Is it safe to set the top minor adjustment until brakes drag slightly AFTER both top (minor) and bottom (major) were previously set to .015? Wouldn't the bottom of the shoe be too far away if top is set closer since they effect each other opposite? I really should tighten the major adjustment...

Brake Pedal Travel and Warm Hubs

You know, come to think of it, when I took off the drums they were tight. Now that is strange, since I set the adjusters both to .015 last Fall with no drag. For some reason they got tighter over winter . Another problem, I noticed the .015 feeler gauge I used last Fall may not have...

Brake Pedal Travel and Warm Hubs

Once the brake pedal goes down 3 inches it is very firm and the truck stops fast. Can't really get it any further than level with the throttle pedal even if mashing it. I bled 3 quarts all together. I don't see how any air could be left. I bled 16 oz from the air pack first. Only way air could...

Brake Pedal Travel and Warm Hubs

Yes it is aired up to around 90 psi.

Brake Pedal Travel and Warm Hubs

This week I finished rebuilding my wheel cylinders and installing a remote reservoir. No more leaks! :naner: I bled over half to 3/4 of a gallon of fresh dot5 through the system at 15 psi. I am sure there is no air left in it with that much bled, and I also bled about 16 oz from the air pack...

Wheel Cylinder Rebuild Issues, Re-use Outer Seals

So any rust removes the hardening? From mechanic/metal working friends I know, they say to remove the hardening would take long acid, water, and rust cycles. Folks who go mudding a lot and have water intrusion into the hubs just soak their rusty bearings in vinegar and re use . As long as...

Wheel Cylinder Rebuild Issues, Re-use Outer Seals

Is it normal for the outer seal to move back and forth bout a millimeter in the keyway? I got the bearing torqued to 50ft lbs and backed off 1/8 turn, but at 50ft lbs the seal does not wiggle.

Wheel Cylinder Rebuild Issues, Re-use Outer Seals

Did something dumb yesterday afternoon. Washed wheel bearings in purple power/water mix as usual then mineral spirit rinse. Works great, but I left the bearings in the hot sun after washing and they flash rusted in minutes! Vinegar works great for removing light rust, so I washed them a bit and...

Wheel Cylinder Rebuild Issues, Re-use Outer Seals

Is it a good idea to clean out the mix of grease and gear oil for inside the hub between the races when repacking bearings? It is only 700 miles old. Kind of a pain in the butt and have to add new grease.

Wheel Cylinder Rebuild Issues, Re-use Outer Seals

Actually now that I think about it, the outer nut on the leaking side wasn't too tight and the inner nut could be turned almost by hand. Perhaps that was the issue after all. The other side was much tighter and the leaking was less severe. I'll go ahead and reuse the seals and torque inner to...

Wheel Cylinder Rebuild Issues, Re-use Outer Seals

Half the honing was done using dot5 for lubrication. Does not work very good. I used cutting oil instead and that worked a lot better!

Wheel Cylinder Rebuild Issues, Re-use Outer Seals

Wheel bearing that had grease washed off. Seems to look ok. Just a a small scratch around the entire bearing, but all the bearings on both sides have that scratch.

Wheel Cylinder Rebuild Issues, Re-use Outer Seals

I took the hubs/drums off of the middle axle due to a brake fluid leak. Wheel cylinders appeared to be leaking. I got two rebuild kits, the Newstar kits which may be made in China, and the Napa UP45 kits which are made in the USA and Mexico, but at least on the Mexico ones the seals say USA...

Failing Front Pinion Bearing, Spring Inspection Results

A few days ago I was all ready to go take the deuce on a 60 mile cruise to haul logs. In the pre trip inspection I noticed fluid on the rims of the inner tandem. Pretty sure it is brake fluid. It was a greenish yellow, and didn't have much of a smell. The gear oil I put in the axle last Fall was...

Water Manifold Rail Coolant Hose too Big?

Around 700 miles later and everything is fine :grd:

Water Manifold Rail Coolant Hose too Big?

I was able to get two short pieces of 1 5/8 hose at auto value and changed them this evening. Soaking the hoses in hot water and lubricating with silicone made them go on easy. The gaskets looked ok when I pulled the manifolds off. One ripped because I pinched it while wiggling the manifolds...
