Convert M817 PTO to air actuated?

Yeah and it works great. I haven't got around to making a real bracket yet, but even the temporary one I made works great. Solved the whole problem. I'll try to get pics tonight if I get home before dark

Convert M817 PTO to air actuated?

Ok, its been awhile but I finally finished a proof of concept. Separating the PTO from the valve works so much better than the stock way. I used a bigger push/pull cable, some metal brackets, a few drilled and tapped holes and it works. I'll have pictures at some point but the bugs were...

    Crazy prices?

The other problem is, even if you change out the alternator for a 4 pole 60hz unit, a lot of the control electronics won't work. I looked at the 400hz machines but I don't think they sell low enough to make it a worthwhile proposition, even getting the alternators at industry pricing.

Convert M817 PTO to air actuated?

Yeah, thats my next step. Though it starts to become much more difficult to mount the cable

Convert M817 PTO to air actuated?

I was able to get the cable temporarily hooked up, and with out the other end mounted I was not able to engage the PTO. It was to hard to pull. I am going to try to make a plate so I can get some leverage against the cable, but it may not be the best solution.

Convert M817 PTO to air actuated?

I'll just make up a bracket to go to the two nearest fasteners. I may need to use the stock long linkage if I can't get onto the same plane, or close enough to the actuator shaft.

Convert M817 PTO to air actuated?

I'm actually leaning more towards the cable as I research. McMaster has a knob operated push/pull cable in 10 or 15' for 27 or 29 dollars. Then its just a matter of a a bracket and cable end. Ok, you sold me! I'm going to measure tonight and order up some parts. Will post pictures.

Convert M817 PTO to air actuated?

I suppose a cable would work, but routing and fixing a cable might be more work than running air lines. With the cable we would still need brackets on both sides, and much more restrictions on bend radius's .

Convert M817 PTO to air actuated?

Thanks for the info! As far as rebuilding/re-using what I have, this whole linkage is archaic. I bet it was designed so that it was one less step for soldiers. I don't see that big of an issue using air. I like the idea of spring so that way I don't have to have air holding it out the...

Convert M817 PTO to air actuated?

My M817 like many has seen mostly short run dump duty in its lifetime. The linkages for dumping/engaging the PTO are pretty well clapped out. Mostly on the PTO side probably by trying to jam it in with the transmission input shaft still spinning. So I could pull everything apart and build...

Electronic Parts Replacements Info for the MEP-802A

I am going to manufacture a few samples and try them out. I will have them in a few weeks, if these work (no technical reason they won't) then I will advertise them for sale. I had the engineering done over two years ago now, just never went the next step to build samples. There is absolutely...

Electronic Parts Replacements Info for the MEP-802A

I have played with a few Mep802 off and on when I'm not busy at work. One of the lines we sell is cam switches, from tiny little guys like S1 all the way up to 500kW voltage change switches. I already worked up a design that is an exact replacement for the S1 and S6. From terminal markings...

Diagnosing the fuel system after you confirmed no leaks in the main lines

I removed the tank pickup tube, and it was in very nice shape. No cracks, no possible leaks. The double flare looks good, so it put it all back together. When I removed the line from the IP it sucked air in as the fuel ran out, leading me to believe I do not have an air leak. I had an idea...

Diagnosing the fuel system after you confirmed no leaks in the main lines

I had enough daylight left to run the engine from a tank. Luckily I have a few 10-an hoses lying around from old projects so I took another hose right into a 5 gallon container. It ran much better directly from the 5 gallon container. I suppose pulling the fuel dip tube out is the next step...

Diagnosing the fuel system after you confirmed no leaks in the main lines

I'm at a bit of a loss here on where to go next with my M817. I don't have the truck on the road yet been working on it when I had time. It would never run right, always take a long time for the RPM's to go up, and then back down. The air compressor kicking on would make the idle fluctuate...

    Cold start primer pump information

I have to hijack this thread just a tad, but it seems the best place to ask this. My primer pumps up and gets exceptionally stiff in one or two pumps. The pressure gauge never moves, and it gets so hard I can't push it in by hand. Once I start cranking the pressure drops and I can pump again...

    Need help priming NHC250

Do you remember what size/where you got the replacement hose for the primer? I haven't dug into yet to see how it changes.

    Air horn woes

Ok, I just stumbled on this thread looking for something else and couldn't help but read through it. I think you are making it complex, and skipping testing the diode at the same time. This is a very simple system, here is what I would do. 1. Verify 24V a the horn from wire 26, you did that...

    Missing First gear on M817

More information for anyone curious: The 1st and reverse function use the same gear on the main shaft. If the gear is slid to the front (1st position) it engages a gear on the lower counter shaft and drives the truck forward. If that gear is slid backwards, it engages the reverse idler gear...

    Missing First gear on M817

Life and other priorities came in front of the truck, so I finally got to tare into my 1st gear problem 2 years later. My plan was to start by pulling the top of the transmission off as a bent fork was the most likely scenario. I was unable to get the top completely off with the cab on the...
