What have you done to your FMTV or LMTV today

I put a double-pole battery disconnect in the connections between my two (not four) batteries. It splits the wiring between the batteries and isolates them from each other. So I now have a 12v dual-output charger, one output to each battery, to keep them charged as if they are two independent...

Removing Troop Seats & Fold Down Sides On M-1081!

Actually, I’m more looking for stakes and cargo side panels, but …could… use everything. My M1081 came with a slick bed, nothing in it. PM me…

Removing Troop Seats & Fold Down Sides On M-1081!

Side questions relating to your removing your troop seats: Are you getting rid of the uprights? Also, I'm missing one of the plates in the bed of my M1081, that covers one of the parachute attachment fittings.

What have you done WITH your FMTV ( trips, Rescues etc) NOT: fixes, updates etc

Well shoot, you should have sent a message. I could have brought Goliath and helped recover. Goliath has the Self Recovery Winch and I’ve got lots of extra toys that I’ve added to the inventory for recoveries. Good on you for self extricating!

What have you done WITH your FMTV ( trips, Rescues etc) NOT: fixes, updates etc

Lake Lahontan, east of Reno and Carson City, has become so full that the beaches have disappeared. Which forces people to try to skirt the lake in deep soft powder-like sand. My M1081, “Goliath”, has no problems with those conditions, and so yesterday did my first recovery of the year. An “4wd”...

What have you done WITH your FMTV ( trips, Rescues etc) NOT: fixes, updates etc

Thx to fly fish trailer, my girlfriend and I had a great drive through western Nevada, including a stop for lunch in Genoa, and the new trailer pulled like a dream. Finding parking was tricky…

    Oil drain pro-tip

It’s a lot different underneath an FMTV than what your video shows. Otherwise I’d do that.

    Oil drain pro-tip

Stream of oil seems to spray everywhere but straight down. Hence, need some mechanism to direct the oil flow

    Oil drain pro-tip

Tie rod, exhaust and leaf spring seems to be in the way. I didn’t try bucket though. thx for input.

    Oil drain pro-tip

Dreaded oil-change time for Goliath, my M1081. I’ve avoided these because of the mess when the oil drains over everything except for the strategically placed pan. Trying to figure a way to direct the geyser of hot, black oil to the pan, I spotted a couple of old RV sewer hose pieces and had an...

Fmtv transmission and CTIS displays suddenly turned off

DId you accidentally switch your lights to Blackout mode? That would kill those displays for certain, especially the transmission control panel.

    Beginning the Journey

1: Welcome to the forum, nice rig! 2: I'm just a couple of hours east of you, off Hwy 50, there's things to do in the area! 3: Who's MME - I WANT some wheel covers!

    Valve behind heater box?

I had that specific problem on my M1081: colder weather I'd have venting from behind the grille. There's another thread that describes how to test which chamber is leaking if it is truly the treadle leaking and not a park/trailer valve. The back-most section of the treadle is serviceable in the...

    Segmented partly-removable LMTV bed?

No further on this thread - I hired professionals to move my fifth wheel when changing job locations. It's cheaper and easier for the once-every-two-to-three-years I change jobs and location. Though every now and then I look at the dollies (jeeps) that are used for attaching second/third...

Starting an LMTV in the cold is like

Ether cylinder is available from NAPA, it's a pretty generic unit. Block heater is much better assuming you've got 110v within reach. Also pretty generic for Cat 3116. DIesels with no glow plugs, block heaters, or grid warmers are ignorant about starting in extreme cold...

Things I am really glad I did to LMTV

"If it's stupid but it works, it's not stupid". Old Army saying. Now that you've shown me how to "remove" a rarely-needed spring leaf, I'll probably do the same to my M1081 that I rarely haul loads with. If need, I'll look at air bags to supplement the missing spring. Slightly different topic...

Joined the club with an 18,000lb paperweight this week.

Somewhere there's a video of a female who'd propped her feet on the dash. Quick brake application popped her off the seat into the passenger floorboards, feet around her ears, and totally unable to extricate herself. That was only a minor brake application. An accident would have much worse, and...

Yes, they are violent, but require an electrical signal to ignite. Unless you have Takata airbags.
