Put some time into disassembly this afternoon. Found the lifter noise. The cam and lifters have been replaced at some point with aftermarket Chinese crap. Main bearings and rod bearings were doing ok.
128k which is accurate. I looked at the truck it came out of. No sludge in the top end. Im not bummed out about it because i got a decent price. I was on the fence about doing a complete rebuild even before i found the issue. This just forces me to do the rebuild. Here are a couple more pics
I had to pull it off to clear the chain when i was lifting it. Its too heavy for my engine stand with the heads on. Ill have to strip it to a shortblock before i can put it on the stand.
The junk yard finally got my 454 out of the donor truck. Heres what i am starting with. I will post photos of the tear down. Going to sell the 6.2 to help offset the costs.
The less glamorous side of things here. Pulled the diff covers, cleaned magnets and service with fresh synthetic fluids. Right rear seal was leaking. Bearings were serviceable. Replaced all seals and gaskets with new.
For what its worth the stock front springs on a low mile us 1008 lay nearly completely flat when removed from the truck. I looked at a set of new old stock factory k30 springs and they were a mirror image of my used springs on my above mentioned 1008 springs. With the stock springs installed...
Im with you 100% if you are concerned about mileage get a bigger fuel tank. These things are American steel and should have an obscene amount of power. Put the big block in it and enjoy owning something that can get out of its own way.
Agreed. The gen 6 vortec had hyd roller cam and good flowing heads. To be honest i would have done a 5.7 but the 7.4 came along at a good price. I should be picking it up this week from the wrecking yard. Ill post some pics of the inspection.
Thats a good question. I haven't driven the truck since i did the cab floor. I can tell you that after i sprayed the bed liner on the bed that it quieted down the road noise a bit. I sprayed the cab floor really heavy using 3 quarts. When i get the opportunity to drive it i will report back.
Im not trying to be a hater but hooking up 21k to a 6.5 and going up any grade in overdrive isn't happening. And by 21k i mean 21k combined across the scales.
