    If I had a winch (which I don't, but is on my "To Do" list) and wanted to lube the cable, I would use Breakfree CLP. I'd soak the cable pretty thoroughly, then wipe it with a CLP soaked rag as I was rewinding it. The CPL will take off a lot of the surface rust. It goes on wet and drys in a day...
