Addition of 1 Ton Bed Crane

Thanks man. The synthetic rope is an interesting idea. How does it secure to the drum? The drum on mine uses a set screw but I think that would damage the rope.

No outriggers. I wish I could get my hands on a crane that would neccesitate outriggers though, lol.

Addition of 1 Ton Bed Crane

I think I finally got everything like I want it, and the weather was nice yesterday, so a little paint was in order...

Honestly I would of liked to go 1/4", and would take you up on the offer if I could, but the hole in the drum will only allow me to go up to 3/16". The drum being such a small diameter would start causing other issues with a larger cable as well. I'll keep that in mind though.

Addition of 1 Ton Bed Crane

Back on track with some updates... The winch I added came with some 5/32" cable which is...small. The hole in the drum let me go up to 3/16" so I spooled a new length of cable just long enough to do what I needed and leave some wraps on the drum. Original length was 50' and I respooled with...

Thanks and copy away. If you happen to be out around Gray, I have plenty of that "NASA atmospheric heat tempered titanium" (giggle), aka aluminum, laying around. I'll cut you some up then all you got to do is drill and bolt it up. Or steel would work I reckon, lol. The one piece of advise I'll...

Capt Jon, Thank you. I do strive to keep my best interest, as well as others, in mind when building and altering things. This is one of the better cranes on the market in this price range and it will definitely meet my needs. I said what I said so that others would understand the potential...

Addition of 1 Ton Bed Crane

Planes are actually made of steel, but painted to look like aluminum. This is to make them "look" lighter and compensate for aluminum's lack of strength. The 2" x 2" x 3/8" angle I used is actually titanium from the left wing of a scrapped NASA space shuttle. In the process of exit and entry of...

    Cliff notes...lol.

Capt Jon, I can't agree with you more, honestly. The dangers of this should've been more clearly addressed. I'd like to elaborate on a couple of your points and add some information, all while not coming off as defensive. :D While I'm not in the overhead profession, I'm around it everyday and...

Addition of 1 Ton Bed Crane

Thanks. I got it while surplus picking. It's part of a Caterpillar transmission service kit the military was using. The kit came with a steel cart that weighed about 400# but he wanted way to much for the cart. It's never been used, I just need to clean the surface rust off the screw. The screw...

Addition of 1 Ton Bed Crane

Continued (to many pictures for a post I reckon)... This shows how I'm running a two part line with a snatch block. This is not to pick up things that are more than capacity. I did this to keep my winch and battery a little happier. I originally tried to use the factory chain grab as the place...

Addition of 1 Ton Bed Crane

Been real busy but finally finished everything except paint. Had to remove the manual winch and move the electric winch lower to make things work. Here's some bracing pics as requested. Used 6 bolts on the base plate that go through the bracing underneath. The middle bolt in the back is lined...

Addition of 1 Ton Bed Crane

Well, everything went well. I successfully loaded the 4wheeler (728 lbs.) in the bed and only had to touch the crane to swing it. It was dark by the time I got to do this though, so no pictures today. I found I will have to move the winch lower down the mast. I made a mount that positioned it...

Addition of 1 Ton Bed Crane

I'm about half way finished with the wireless winch install. I'll be doing some heavier picks this evening when I have this done. I'll get some more pictures with measurements up this evening or tomorrow.

Didn't have time to mount the winch. I couldn't seem to stop picking things up with the new cylinder. This thing is great and well worth the money. Can't wait to get the winch installed. It'll probably be Saturday night before that happens. Load test results: 523lb. vise pedestal lifted with...

Addition of 1 Ton Bed Crane

Lol. I think my in-laws drilled the holes in the base plate. Let's just say they're not exactly...well...square.

Addition of 1 Ton Bed Crane

My crane finally showed up. I finished installing the base last night. I'll put the rest together this evening. Here's some pictures of the underside bracing. Basically the floor supports have a flange that is welded to the bottom of the bed, but the flange is only on one side. The rear most...

Addition of 1 Ton Bed Crane

I'm still going to end up with a winch on there. I just ran out of gift cards and the cylinder was the cheaper option for now haha. I'll end up having both on there in the end, as long as the cylinder works out. Do you happen to have the collapsed dimensions of the top without the base? I need...

Addition of 1 Ton Bed Crane

That's very helpful. The floor flexing was my biggest concern, and rightfully so from your experience. I'd rather only have to drill and install once, if you know what I mean. Yes. This is the one I got. It's rated for 8 tons which should be what's on there already. It's a replacement for...
