OK, it is obvious you do not understand manual transmissions. The synchro cone does not drive the gear like you suggested. The cone, if you will only speeds up or slows down the gear. The actual shifting is from the collar of the synchro which actually engages the gear. Metal on metal ! Next...

Not knowing your back ground, I'm just assuming you never worked in a maintenance shop before. So to your first point. The gear is still engaging at the splines with the "help" of the synchro. So it still needs wear protection. Yes, there are now new automatics that don't use planetary gears. So...

Another thing you must consider is the make up of ATF and gear oil. Gear oil has "sulfur" anti-wear compounds which help in shifting. Now Automatic transmissions do not shift gears. They use "planetary gear sets" which are always in mesh. As do the newer transfer-cases. Also the newer...

Why does Ford and Chrysler only recommend that the NP205 use gear oil ? Why is it that GM is the only one who used ATF ? I said it before, the military wanted a simple system for their trucks. No problems with gear oil contaminating the transmission. There was a Bulletin on that I read a few...

GM was the only one to have "shift on the fly" NP205 transfer-cases. It was a total flop. They broke so fast and so often they forced to go back to the original NP205 design. They used ATF to help with the shifting.

When the industry recommends 80/90W gear oil I would use that.

We have hashed this out before. NP205 transfer-cases should have gear oil in them. ATF is not thick enough to lubricate them when they get hot. You wouldn't put ATF in your differential or manual transmission would you ? Same thing here. The gears need a high compression/shear oil. Just look up...
