They are both cummins engines. One is a 505ci 8.3L 6cta turbocharged engine. The other is a 855ci NHC250 Naturally aspirated engine. Easier to post a picture of your engine for me to tell you which one.
There are 2 different types of transmission setups Depending on what engine you have. The torque converter ratio and front pump vary between the 8.3 and NHC250. which engine do you have?
You also Don't know the trucks history prior to you buying it, could have been abused.
M939s are fairly reliable. I have put em thru all types of abuse and usage than nearly anyone on this forum. Generally only get 30k miles from the Allison if it's being used in constant towing capacity.

Honestly as long as you have 8000 to 12000 in the bed you are ok I believe. Especially with a medium heavy or heavy bar to get it off your butt. It also helps a lot to pull the front hubs off so the front axle free wheels. I always carry an extra set of desplined hubs cause it makes tow baring...

You have other 5 tons dont you? just put weight in a cargo bed and towbar it home after dropping the front tandem shaft.

Allison makes a troubleshooting guide for the 600 series transmissions. I have a take out 654 that is on a pallet ready to go. I think it can ship thru fastenal to Williston.

It locks the torque converter up if it staying energized then it wont release the pressure. It a common problem where it will get stuck im reverse or neutral then when you put it in drive itll lock up the truck and kill it. It is your simplest check since you had to push it to move the transfer...
See if the switch on your transfer case lever is stuck. If not unplug it from the capacitor. Number 585 and 586 wires. If still a no go then your valve body is stuck or 4th gear burned up and welded itself to the reverse clutch. Or it decided it was its time. They do that.
