i'll bite too. Starting in 2nd gear will destroy the synchros on the 2nd gear mainshaft??? i have at least as much experiance with this trans as anyone and i have no idea what you are saying..........
seriously, i think a lot of issues come from the droop setting of the ip. it has a very large effect on very low rpm torque. i used to start in 3rd with the 3208 cat with almost no clutch slippage when on level roads, but it had 600+ ft lbs torque.
and they say to use 90 wt oil also, but i wouldn't. the army is assuming worst case and driver can't think, i.e. loaded and off road. manual was probably written for gasser and never changed.

2nd gear is the preferred starting gear unless you are loaded. it your truck does not have any torque at those low rpms there is something wrong with the pump adjustment, and i have seen many that needed adjusting. starting in first is bad for the transmission because it is very...
