    Tested fuel burning heaters today

In the process of resurrecting an SW heater and I would like to post my procedure for draining fuel from the combustion chamber here. If the unit doesn't ignite on time (after about a minute) and you continue to hold the start switch in "start", fuel will begin to build up at a rate of more than...

    Tested fuel burning heaters today

Know what you mean, just look at the dates of the above postings and you'll see me doing the same. :-) Still haven't gotten into the coolant heater after I left it back in October...

    Tested fuel burning heaters today

So I took the best parts from the two Benmar units I have, cleaned everything and re-installed it on the truck. It was running after 2 minutes and 40 seconds and I let it run for 15 minutes. No smoke in weird places....The shut down sequence took 1 minute and 45 seconds and it smokes at this...

    Tested fuel burning heaters today

Tested the Benmar heater for the first time in six or so months and noted smoke in the hot air outlet...not good. Took the whole thing apart and found corrosive damage by the combustion chamber. The double walled structure that feeds air into it is rusted thru in several places. Question: Has...

    Tested fuel burning heaters today

This one is cracked, the heater has a big dent in it, so it's not surprising, I still have a good unit, though. The disc is item #41 in the diagram. The Benmar heater model number is AP-3050 and the NSN is 2540-00-186-2558

    Tested fuel burning heaters today

It's one of those days, cool and overcast, so it's not too fun to work outside. Took apart a Benmar heater and noticed that it doesn't use a wick, like the Stewart & Warner units, but has a ceramic block with the igniter running right through it. I kind of like that, should make it more...

    Tested fuel burning heaters today

Checked the calibration of a Benmar fuel valve today for a break in the routine and found it working right off the bat, something that the South Wind heaters never did (five out of five have needed work). If the rest of the heater works as well, I'll be swapping it for the South Wind unit, now...

    Tested fuel burning heaters today

Adjusted the flame detector switch and started the heater. Test 1 (08:20) Time to flame ( I can hear the rumble from the flame): 20 seconds Time to light (flame detector switch): 90 seconds It now runs continuously, but smokes badly, so I turn it off after 1 minute. The purge time is about 2...

    Tested fuel burning heaters today

I have used two different fuel valves on this heater and discovered this morning that the wiring to the solenoids had accidentally been switched last time one was installed, so the valve never turned on... The wiring was corrected, but it still didn't ignite. I suspect that during the...

    Tested fuel burning heaters today

Getting psyched up to work on the coolant heater again, checked my records and the last time it was running was on 09.07.08. It was then running on its own after 50 seconds, but smoked a lot, so I shut it down. It kept going for another 3 minutes while smoking and I hit the emergency off to...

    Tested fuel burning heaters today

Shut it down, flipped the switch to "OFF" and it ran for 110 seconds before turning itself off. Flipping the switch to "OFF" turns off the fuel pump and de-energizes the "S" solenoid. The heater then runs on its own to use up any left-over fuel.

    Tested fuel burning heaters today

To gain confidence, I run the one working heater I have from time to time. Started the cab heater this morning (it took 75 seconds before it ran on its own) and it's running as we speak, now 55 minutes later. Some observations, the exhaust pipe gets very hot but the heater sheet metal enclosure...

    Tested fuel burning heaters today

The procedure you describe is close to mine, but I also bleed the fuel line from the pump to make sure all air is out each time I try a new valve...hate running that igniter with no fuel, even thought about adding a delay circuit for the igniter to let the wick soak up enough fuel for a more...

    Tested fuel burning heaters today

I routinely take the solenoids out and apart. Always energize the "S" solenoid when testing flow. Energizing both the "S" and the "R" solenoids will give you the "HI" flow rate.

Chuck, take a look at the "orifice plate", hold it up towards a light and make sure the holes are not clogged. It was a problem in at least one of my fuel valves. It's the plate sandwiched with gaskets and held in place with three screws on the end, opposite to the fuel delivery adjustment...

    Tested fuel burning heaters today

Found wicks from this seller: item#350106053163 I was able to install one 1/8" dia wick, about 2 inches long, in the 20,000 BTU heater, but haven't tested it yet. The 30,000 BTU South Wind heater has a wick, which seem almost an integral part of the ceramic vaporizer, so I'm not sure how...

Time flies Chris. So, which vehicle will this be for? Recalibrated the fuel control valve and got the coolant heater started, but was sidetracked to work on the fuel selector valves for the 50 gallon tanks. Just finished the last of the electrically heated fuel lines yesterday so I should be...

    Tested fuel burning heaters today

Thanks, and after reading your PM again (about too much fuel causing smoke and shut-down), I now need to recheck my fuel valve calibration, which is on the high side, perhaps just a few cc's per minute is enough to make it overheat. The table above specifies 7.5 +-1 and my setting is more like...

    Tested fuel burning heaters today

Made some progress on the coolant heater. Replaced the control valve with another that I was able to calibrate close to the specified flow rate. Next, I went thru the starting procedure and could hear the flame catch after about 2 minutes. Good news it's running, however the flame detector...
