It's pretty simple really. The Army was just VERY literal when they gave these trucks a weight rating.
1 ton = 2000 pounds
Then they allowed 500 pounds for gear and the driver/co-driver
That gives you 2500 pounds, or 1.25 tons of payload capacity.
