I don't think JD engineers were smoking anything at the time....the New Generation tractors were so far ahead of their time that it completely blew all of the competition out of the water! No one had the comfort, reliability, or durability that these have. We have a 4020 and friends have a 4010...
Speaking of the detroits....I was at the National John Deere Two-Cylinder Expo at Waterloo, and one of the exhibits there was a 4020 with a 6V92 Detroit swapped in. Others have done it also, with bigger ones....here are the pics. Yes that is a random guy, and yes, sorry for the slight blurryness.

I know many older construction/excavating equipment ran the old Detroits, like excavators, loaders, and I think many cranes. Certainly off road dumps too.
But they are reliable, simple, and popular, so the engine should be the least of...
