Storage term is not a problem. Old stale gas seems to work as well as fresh gas for this purpose. The only thing you may find with gas/oil mix is the longer you let it set, the more slime settles out to the bottom of the barrel, which doesn't hurt a thing if you leave it in the bottom.

Our first filter setup was a 12 volt pump with a 5 micron absolute canister that clogged after 7 gallons. We made a bag filter similar to randini's, taking it down to 1 micron nominal, and then put it through the 5 absolute. Other than that, we have not done a lot with canisters.
