    Towbar Incident Report

I could not agree with you more on the pins. I just pulled a towbar apart yesterday that had a grade 8 bolt holding the legs together. It was the standard 3/4" size, but grade 8 did not hold up. It had "rings" from wear embedded all the way around the bolt where the bolt would "turn" inside the...

Thanks tow4. Completely agree. He did good, under the circumstances.

    Towbar Incident Report

TOW4, you do realize of course most destruct testing is done on new material, not well used material that has already been through a great deal of stress. You have to do a reverse engineering of a broken device to determine cause. i I am thinking what we have here based on the OP's comments...

    Towbar Incident Report

Yes, I posted the original .pdf file here back in Sept. I believe, for all to see and download. (If you mean the MRAP towbars. ) I guess the single most important thing I wanted to get across here is maintenance of these pins. The only way to maintain them is to change them out after use. I...

    Towbar Incident Report

As I mentioned earlier. Contractor CYA (lawyers) And I thought the weight of pull for a Deuce is 10,000 pounds or so. I couldn't see all the data that went along with your data. Finally, the only thing I find to be conclusive about the original post is, it is inconclusive, without evidence...

    Towbar Incident Report

My post was more on common sense approach to towing under a wide variety of circumstance as I noted. In the common sense approach theory, you should not pick apart the individual or partial thoughts I put out there, but look at the broader picture I am trying to portray. I am NOT trying to be...

    Towbar Incident Report

The mph quote was for a wheels up tow using a wrecker and towbar as was the tow a vehicle without brakes quote. The wreckers that do a wheels up tow in the civilian world cannot rely on the towed vehicle to help stop or slow it down. And regardless of size of wrecker, they are not all going...

    Towbar Incident Report

Not taking any sides on this one. Just giving another opinion. I always felt the 15-25mph tow speed on highways was recommended for towed vehicles without brakes. There are so many common sense considerations when towing it could fill up a book. For instance, the vehicle doing the towing...

I see what you're saying. He should change the title from; "Towbar Pin Broke" to "Maybe the towbar Pin Broke"

    Towbar Incident Report

Lynch pin falling out is a possibility. He did say the pin broke though. Stress test are run all the time in the Air Force. Fractures due to stress are known to bring down $70M fighter jets, or $100M cargo jets. Metals will only take so much abuse, and he did say he was pulling off the...

    Towbar Incident Report

Just be sure you buy original mil-spec pins that come with the towbars, or from a GL auctions. There are plenty of people out there with them. I would never use a grade 8 bolt, or anything else other than the original mil spec pins specifically tested at the highest standards for these things...

    Towbar Incident Report

It would be burrs most likely, from repetitive use that weaken the pin. If used extensively, it is always a good idea to change them out, and throw the old ones away.

    Towbar Incident Report

I'm assuming it was a one inch mil-standard pin. Hard to imagine a pin like that going from a 16000 pound load. It must have been burred up real bad from to many pulls. BTW, the egg shaping would have occured when the pin first broke. One side would not be carrying much if any weight. The...
