I'll get to the 'short change' this weekend and filter the oil before putting it back in. If there's anything major to report, I'll repost then.
Ok... Sounds like a good idea.
Question: If that new oil, once drained out, looks clear... do you think it would be ok to filter it and put it back in the engine again?
Ok... I have tested the metal pieces which came out into my drain bucket and most are not attracted to a strong magnet. A few are, but most are not. It's a bit hard to tell for sure, but they mostly look to be a silver, bright color.
I am looking for a decent camera so I can post a photo...
Well... I did my complete oil and filter change. Added the correct measure of zinc additive and now have that task checked off my list. However, all is not without some concerns.
Here's why:
The last oil change was done by the previous owner and he used an unspecified systhetic. When...
Wow... that's pretty sad! But... probably not uncommon.
I've got a neighbor who contends it's 'proof of a quality machine', the longer his vehicle can keep running... without... his having to do ANY... routine, or preventitive maintenance on it!
He recently told me: "Wish I had all...
This truck does not have the 'spin on filter' setup. It's pretty much a 'stock' machine.
It also came with a case of extra oil filters, so I'll probably not consider a conversion until I've used them all.
BTW... Hope you and your truck are doing well after your recent travel adventure.
YUP... I think that's probably the best thing to do at this point.
As a new owner, I really have no way of knowing what has, or has not been done (by previous owners) with respect to the quality, chemical makeup and condition of the lubricants that currently flow through this machine...
I can not find any evidence of any oil leaking, but after reading this... I'm wondering if it's possible that the synthetic oil acted to dissolve the
"crud or sludge" deposits that may have built up over the years. Might that crud and sludge have turned the semi-clear, brownish 'new' oil color...
Ok... here's what I found while checking the crankcase oil level once it had cooled down overnight:
[1] The oil color was a very dark black. [2] The oil consistency was very thin. [3] The oil did not smell like diesel at all to me. [4] The oil did, however, have a smell that reminded me of...
Rustystud...
Thanks for the helpful, detailed reply. Much appreciated! :-D
As far as I can tell, there does not seem to be any leaking of crankcase oil yet, so that's a good thing. How long does it take for the synthetic oil to find the tiny cracks and show up as leaks? The reason I ask that...
Hi rustystud...
I've just picked up my first M35A2 and have been making my best effort to learn what types of lubrications are best for it.
The previous owner had just done a complete oil and filter change of the crankcase and he stressed that he used synthetic
oil in the process. That was...
I probably should have been a bit clearer in my previous post that this link, http://www.ttalk.info/Zddp.htm actually makes
a pretty strong connection to: damage to some older vehicles due to a lack of ZDDP.
I agree! Almost feels like it might take a 'rocket-scientist' to grasp the...
This topic is of great interest to me since I recently picked up my very first M35A2. It's a 1970 multifuel and I want to do the very best I can for it. Making sure it is 'revitalized' with good, clean and effective lubricants is one of my first priorities as the new owner of this awesome...
After reading (and studying) this entire thread... I too am planning to increase the Zinc levels.
Since the multifuel does not have a catalytic converter, I'm thinking it'd be be a good thing to add without
bringing about any of the negative side effects which seem to be of concern to the EPA.
