With the 3.07:1 gears it will only do 72MPH, but it's fine doing that, if you have the Goodyear tires. 60MPH is at high RPM in the 6th gear, so you don't want to do that any more than you want to run at 72MPH, really. I find that 65MPH is a really nice cruising speed, low into the 7th gear RPM...
I'm not sure what you're suggesting. As soon as you pull the large plug to get the shaft out, most of it comes out. Plus, since they are the same as the front hub, that would only save you 11-13oz each, which isn't really much savings when you have to buy almost 7 gallons of fluid.
When I did...
Front Axle Differential: SAE 75-W90, 9.5 qt
Rear Axle Differential: SAE 75-W90, 18.05 qt
Front Axle Planetary Hubs: SAE 75-W90, 11-13 fl oz (each)
The total is almost 7 gallons. Mine took every bit of that.
Pretty late to the party. The inexpensive "scrapped" ones from Texas are long gone. Now you're looking at a few thousand dollars per axle ($3500?), and up.

"Rockwell International also spun off its automotive division as a publicly traded company, Meritor Automotive, based in Troy, Michigan, which then merged with Arvin Industries to form Arvin Meritor. That company is now known as Meritor, Inc."
If you shift into 7th at 44MPH with stock gears, you would be shifting at ~56MPH with 3.07:1 gears.
(3.90/3.07) = 1.27
44MPH * 1.27 = 55.9MPH
I'm trying to check the math on Tenmogger's shift from 6th to 7th at 44MPH...
Tire: 395/85R20 diameter is 46.437", and multiply by pi to get 145.886"...
I have a 290HP 3116 out of an M1083 in my M1078A0. I changed the engine before the gears, so I don't know what it would do with a stock 225HP engine. I can hit about 72MPH on level ground. I keep it at 65MPH (which is just after the shift into 7th gear at 60-62MPH [GPS verified] for me)...
What benefit are people seeking with 2.87:1 gears? Are you trying to go 80MPH?
I have 3.07:1 gears, and the >20% drop in torque (to gain the >20% speed) is noticeable. If I had the option, I would be choosing something between 3.9 and 3.07... whatever was just enough to get me a reasonable...
If the gears are all set up correctly in the 3rd member, what does the swap entail? Do you just pull the axle shafts, and swap the 3rd members? I guess on the front you can't just pull the shafts, and so that might require taking the whole knuckle off/apart, correct?
That is not very typical. 5-7 MPG is a more realistic expectation. (Army thinks so too... truck has a 58 gallon tank designed to let it go 300 miles, so simple math.)
