Look on the bright side, my transmission was saved because of this conversation. I'm positive that if I had kept driving it with 30 weight in it, it would be scrap soon.

I just got back from a 35 mile joy ride and the transmission is shifting perfectly. Now I can say with 100% certainty that the 30 weight oil was the cause of my problem.

I have one other thing I want to mention. In the mornings when the temperature is in the low 40's it shifted good. As it warmed up it started to act up. In the afternoon when the temperature is in the low 80's it shifted bad all the time.

I pulled the plugs and found a small amount of steel on the magnets. Not enough to be worried about. I filled it up with 80 weight oil and took it for a 5 mile drive. The first couple of shifts weren't very good. The shifter fluttered a few times and then in went into gear. As I drove further...

I did add a magnet to the fill and drain plugs. I've got my fingers crossed.

I finished my transmission rebuild about 4 weeks ago and everything seemed to be working great. I used the 30 weight non detergent oil because the documentation available suggested that was the correct oil for the job. I've put about 40 miles on it so far and now I am starting to have problems...

A friend of mine recommend Redline light weight shock proof. He is an incredible mechanic and I trust his opinion. http://www.redlineoil.com/product.aspx?pid=43&pcid=7

I only owned it for 5 months out of 44 years. I don't know what happened before I bought it.

To keep things on topic I want to say that the wear that I see in this transmission that had gear oil in it is minimal. The rust was most likely caused dy water. The beat up edges on first gear and the reverse gear are from grindind (possibly a synchro) I'm not an expert on this. So over all...

This doesn't look so bad to me. First gear is chewed up. Some rust on a few parts. The input shaft has a bit of a wobble to it. I didn't notice anything else that looked worn out.

My M35A2 is new to me. I have only owned it for 5 months now. I've only been driving it for 2 months. My transmission is in bad shape and will be removed from the truck today after work. I know it has gear oil but I don't know what type.

Unless someone can come up with something that indicates otherwise.

I'm trying to learn everything I can but when I put a question out there they mostly go unanswered. So instead of working on the truck I end up searching the Internet for the answers. They may not even be the right answers, but that's what I found.
