Wheel Bearing Temps High, grease & Preload Q's

Here's the IR/Laser Thermometer Gun that I bought at HarborFreight for checking the running gear temps on my MVs.... Non-Contact Laser Thermometer GREAT TOOL for checking the temps of your hubs, diffs, xfercase, trans, etc. Allows you to catch problems before they get TOO COSTLY!! At this...

Wheel Bearing Temps High, grease & Preload Q's

No crush sleeve from what I remember... Measuring slack w the dial indicator sounds like a good idea. (I relied on the "touchy feely" method, AND my IR gun to verify the running heat build-up.) One thing to remember is that many of the afternarket repair parts used here have different...

Wheel Bearing Temps High, grease & Preload Q's

I agree! Could also be grease washout caused by a bad seal. In MY case it was caused by a combination of too much preload and the use of the wrong grease. Too hot to touch is TOO HOT! Suggest that you pick up an IR Thermometer Gun to check your temps (available pretty cheap from Harbor...

Wheel Bearing Temps High, grease & Preload Q's

ANOTHER UPDATE: I picked up the truck today. But before paying the bill I took it for a long test drive (approx 30 miles, mostly at highway speeds)... Checked the hubs immediately after stopping with an IR gun. None of the hubs was hotter than the high 120's (degrees F). [thumbzup] BTW...

Wheel Bearing Temps High, grease & Preload Q's

Thanks for the tip. I have NO IDEA how much grease has been used... That is one disadvantage of not doing this particular repair myself. I do know that they used High-temp Lithium Grease this time, & not Moly Grease. I guess I'll discover how much is in there when I next get an...

Wheel Bearing Temps High, grease & Preload Q's

Couldn't agree more! I have PLENTY of other "toys" that keep me up to my elbows in grease & oil (& dirt, & blood, & sweat, & tears...) I'm sure that this one will be similar... It IS already off to a good start down THAT path!! BTW: Unofficially, I was helping with the repairs for this new...

Wheel Bearing Temps High, grease & Preload Q's

Have you ever pointed an IR gun at them to get a temp reading? Just noticed that you are in Alaska... So I'm ASSUMING you are referencing summer driving conditions & not when you are wearing gloves & snow boots! Correct!? (Sorry! I just couldn't resist!! Beautiful state you have up...

Wheel Bearing Temps High, grease & Preload Q's

UPDATE: I spoke with the repair shop this afternoon... -They pulled the pass rear wheel bearings again, cleaned them off (removed all of that Moly grease), & inspected them carefully (all looked good!) -They Repacked them with High Temp Lithium Grease (the type normally used for disk brakes)...

Wheel Bearing Temps High, grease & Preload Q's

THANKS for inputs!! THANKS Guys for all of your answers & suggestions! The repair shop has disassembled the rear wheel bearing assys again... They are inspecting the bearings & races, and will be packing them with a non-Moly high temp grease prior to reinstall. For your reference here's a...

Wheel Bearing Temps High, grease & Preload Q's

So is there a preferred place to get the "correct" seals that don't cause this problem? OR is modifying the seal the only solution? BTW: The new seals that were just installed came from Memphis. I've read the threads that discuss the seals causing heat builld up. & I don't 100% understand...

Wheel Bearing Temps High, grease & Preload Q's

I respectfully disagree. While the 3 threads are indeed related to the same issue that I'm currently experiencing, I OBVIOUSLY felt that the 3 topics were distinct enough to warrant 3 distinct threads. Now with the 3 threads combined into 1 the responses are somewhat confusing, and the...

Wheel Bearing Temps High, grease & Preload Q's

Brake is not dragging. Already checked that. Wheel spins freely when jacked up off the ground. But you DEFINITELY CAN't hold your hand to the cap for more than a few seconds before it gets too hot! 180 degrees! "OUCH!" (I'm suspecting incorrect bearing preload, or bad bearings, or maybe even...

Wheel Bearing Temps High, grease & Preload Q's

Wheel Bearing Grease What is the correct or preferred wheel bearing grease for the Deuce? My mechanic said that the grease that was in there at disassembly was clear. Looked like general purpose grease. He put in Red Synthetic Heavy Duty Moly Grease when he replaced the seals. Now my...

Wheel Bearing Temps High, grease & Preload Q's

Wheel Bearing Preload Torque What is the correct Rear Wheel Bearing Preload Torque & Final Torque? & what is the correct procedure? I've seen some posts on front wheels that say preload to 50 ft lb while rotating wheel, then back off 1/4 turn, & then install jamb nut to 100-150ft-lbs. Is...

Wheel Bearing Temps High, grease & Preload Q's

What is the acceptable operating temp for a wheel bearing? What temp is too hot? I just had the rear wheel seals on the passenger side replaced and now they are running 130 degrees after a short 10 minute drive on the freeway, 180 degrees after a 20 minute freeway drive. The driver's side...
