    You should be able to just push the tappets in and be good to go. They are a loose enough fit so they can slide up and down easily. You can probably do it with one of the push rods. It's weird about the push rods. Is it a rebuild engine? Maybe they got damaged before they were put in the...

    If you take off any of the rod bolts you'll need to put in new ones. I saw in previous threads about thrown rods it may have been from reusing old rod bolts that stress fractured and it was just a matter of time before they let go.
